THURSDAY, SEPT. 15th, 1932 Injured Hunter is Recovering From Gunshot Wound Condition of Jack Caverley is Stated to be Somewhat Improved An improvement in the condi- tion of Jack Caverley, young married man of Kirkland Lake, and a former resident of Cobalt, who was seriously hurt when his gun went off unexpectedly while he was duck hunting last Friday, is reported in messages from his wife in Toronto to relatives in Cobalt. Mr. Caverley is a patient in the Toronto General Hospital, and Dr. E. W. Mitchell, also for- merly of Cobalt, has hopes of saving his right arm if the im- provement is sustained. The young man was in a punt on the Amikougami river, near Kirkland Lake, when the acci- dent happened. He went to draw the 12-guage shotgun toward him, when the trigger caught and the barrel was discharged. The full force of the shot. was received by the hunter. in his right shoulder, which was badly shattered. He walked a mile out to the road, was given a lift into Kirkland Lake, and after treat- ment there by Dr. C. G .Smith, was sent to Toronto by Satur- day's train. f On Monday, a message from the city intimated the patient's condition was serious, as infec- tion had set in, and his wife, his brother, Blake, his sister, Mrs. Watkinson, and Carl Hutt, start- ed for Toronto by car. At the time he went through here last Saturday, there was some doubt if the arm could be saved, but the last reports yesterday are more reassuring on this point. Jack Caverly is well-known in Cobalt. In his boyhood days he was actively associated with the Y.M.C.A., and one year carried off the shot put championship of Ontario in his' class when per- forming under "Y" colors at a meet held by Broadview Y.M.C,. A. in Toronto. For some years past he has been living at Kirk- a ptain at the Barry operty in Boston e. Lyon in Final Last Saturday Don Neelands, youthful mem- ber of the Haileybury Golf Club, who annexed the Junior cham- pionship a couple of weeks ago from a small field of youngsters, proved that he was master of the Senior division on Saturday last, when he won the Purchas Mem- orial Trophy, emblematic of the club titlé, defeating Dr. R. Lyon in the final, 4 up and 2 to play. : Don's game has improved won- derfully this year and he is now shooting the difficult local layout in figures not far removed from par. He had a slump early in August when he attended the Northern Ontario championship tourney at Timmins and did not make the grade to qualify there, but his game is back to normal again and he had.a comparatively easy trip to the local title, de- feating most of his opponents by comfortable margins. In the quarter finals Dr. Lyon won from H. E. Cawley, M. C. H. Little won from C. P. Furlong, Don Neelands defeated N. J. Ev- erard and W. A. O'Flynn elimin- ated D. E. Sutherland. In the semi-finals Lyon. beat Little and Neelands beat O'Flynn pea DENTAL ASSOCIATION HEARS LECTURE FROM UNIVERSITY DOCTOR The South Temiskaming Den- tal- Association met in Hotel Haileybury on Monday afternoon with a full attendance of the members, from points between Cobalt and Kirkland Lake, to at- tend a clinic Held by Dr. R. G. Ellis, of the University of Toron- to. The subject of the doctor's lecture was "Prosthetci Dentist- ry," which was made particularl- ly interesting to the gathering through the medium of lantern slides and other illustrations. - At the short business meeting which followed the clinic the dentists arranged for their annua golf tournament, to be jheld on the Haileybury course \. he tear future. The contest had been narrowed down to four rinks on Thursday and in the draw for the semi-finals Joy opposed Jay Gould while J. E. McCuaig and Sheriff Caldbick fought out the other contest. In both of these games there were fairly easy victories, McCuaig having a good lead over the Sher- iff and Joy winning his game easily, but in the final there was a stiffer contest. The winners bowled consistently throughout and there was conisderable inter- est shown in the game by a good number of spectators. The President's Cup, donated by Judge Hayward for annuvl competition at the local Golf Club, was won this season by R. D. Cumming, with L.H. Ferguson runner-up. : oe The trophy is for the best three cards in four turned in during the event, a round of which is played in June, July, August and September. ae : In the Matter of the Estate of Lorne B.
