THURS., NOVEMBER 3, 1932 THE HAILEYBURIAN Page 5 Plans for Season Made at Curling Club Gathering Thirty - Five' Members Present and Considerable Discussion Takes Place Thirty-five members of the Haileybury Curling Club assem- bled last Thursday evening in the Matabanick Hotel to partake of the annual dinner and elect offi- cers for the coming season. Full justice was done to the turkey dinner prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Bulger, and the meeting got to work at 'serious affairs. The Treasurer's report was read and adopted, the balance re- maining after the past season's operations being turned over to the Curling Club Limited. Joseph Isherwood succeeds Dr. J. C. Crawford as president, while W. R. Thompson was _ re-elected vice-president, C. P. Furlong as treasurer and F. L. Fleming as secretary. Last year's executive Messrs. A. P. Knechtel, Lorne H. Ferguson, D. E. Sutherland, T. Me Duncan and Wm: Short were also re-elected. ' Directors of the Limited Com- pany were present and made sug- gestions regarding the operation of the rink for the season, and these were discussed and_ the whole mater left for the officers of the Club and the Directors of the Company to arrive at an ami- cable agreement. The amount turned over by the curlers this fall was not sufficient. to cover the 'running expenses of the Company, and some iu. wrange- ment will have to be made for the season. now coming on. \ The presentation of prizes" to the rinks winning the various Club Competitions last winter was a pleasant feature of the evening, and each winning rink received their due of praise on their achievements. Several good suggestions were offered to aid in making the ap- 'proaching season a_ successful one, and they were passed on ta "the executive to deal with. Second Toxoid Treatment to be Given Tomorrow Will Also Include Children of Pre-School Age; Mothers Invited to Clinic The Medical Health Officer, Dr. W. C. Arnold, and the | Public Health Nurse ,Miss G. Motley, are again requesting parents of Haileybury children to bear in mind that the second toxoid treatment will be given in the public school tomorrow after- noon, commencing at 1.30. At that time 145 children of the pub- lic and separate schools, who re- ceived the first treatment on Oc- tobes 14th, will be given the sec- ond dose, and there will also be 15 children between the ages of two and six who will be thus treated. For the benefit of par- ents of children of pre-school age it is also. announced that they bring them for the first treat- ment at that time, or if they so desire, can have treatment ad- ministered by their family phy- sician, but all are urged to take this step to protect them against diphtheria. The treatment consists of three doses of the toxoid, injected un- der the skin, at intervals of three weeks. Within four to six months after the final dose the individual has built up his im- munity to the disease, in the words of the health authorities. The weekly child welfare clinic is held on Thursday afternoons, from two to five o'clock, in the Knights of Columbus Hall, Main Street. To this all mothers are invited and Miss Motley has written the following notes on that phase of public héalth work in Haileybury : "The clinic is to assist mothers in keeping 'their infants and children healthy, and to advise mothers in the ways by which they may protect their children from illness and disease. 4 A well balanced diet is neces- sary for normal growth and de- velopment. At certain ages chil- dren must have included in their diet foods containing the neces- sary elements for proper nturi- tion. At the clinic, the mothers may learn what foods are necessary in the diets of the infants and Pi } iated Boards of Trade Chess Column The Chess Club meets every Thurs- day evening at the Canadian Legion Rooms on Browning Street. Thorpe Queries are invited and will be answered in this column Dr. Ettore Bellini, born in 1876, was chief electrical engineer to the Italian Navy, and chief of the Naval Electri- cal Laboratory at Venice. Belline was joint inventor with Captain Tosi of an instrument known as the radiogonio- meter. This device was used in find- ing the direction of transmitted radio signals. Dr. Louis Cohen was born in Russia in 1876. He came to the United States a few years later. He is noted for his formulae and tables for the calculation of alternating current problems. He has also evolyed many formulas for the measurement of inductance and capacity. A German radio engineer and inven- tor, Rudolph Goldschmidt, was born in 1876. In 1912 he invented one of the first practical alternators for generat- ing high frequency currents suitable for continuous wave radio transmis- sion.. This alternator now bears his name. He established two large wire- less stations at Eilvesen in the prov- ince of Hanover and at Tuckerton, N.J. for communication between Germany and America. Edgar Marchant, a British radio ex- pert, born in 1876, was for some time closely related with W. Duddell. This association brought about the develop- ment of the oscillograph. He is also credited with a number of radio ventions. (to be continued.) 2 QUESTIONS 7? Ques.--What is the location, frequ- ency and power of station XER and XED in Mexico--L.M., Cobalt. Ans. '| LIMITED A Debate Hydro Power in North (Continued from Page 1) thus made possible some valuable e| advertising of the North Country there. The railway had paid all the expenses, Mr. Wright said, and the meeting accorded both a hearty vote of thanks for this service. The question of the place of the next meeting, which will be the annual session in Februarv next, was left to the executive, and the delegates retired to the New Liskeard curling rink, where a dinner was tendered by the New Liskeard Board. At the banquet Henry O'Grady in the absence of the president of the local Board, and W. H. Walter, acting mayor, welcomed the visitors, the toast to whom was proposed by the latter and responded to by C. W. Wright of Englehart. Mr. Wright gave some amusing instances of how he had spread the gospel of the North while at the Toronto exhi- bition and the ridiculous questions that had been asked, even by peo- ple of Ontario, and concluded with an invitation to all present to attend the opening of the new bridge at Englehart on Novem- ber 2nd. Wes. McKnight, a _ pioneer member of the Boards of Trade, proposed a toast to the Associat- ed Boards, which was responded to by the president, W. O. Lang- don. Mr. McKnight gave an in- teresting sketch of the founding of the first Board of Trade. in the North, at New Liskeard in 1903, which was composed of men of Cobalt, Haileybury and New Liskeard. Mr. Langdon. gave a short outline of the work of the Association during the past few years and the importance of the projects that were now under consideration. It would be a cal- amity for the North Country, he said, if the Association were to be disbanded, a, step that had been suggested from some quar- ters. Other speakers included H. Darling ,president of the Engle- hart Board, O. J. Thorpe, presi- dent of the Haileybury Board, A. E. Stephenson, editor of The New Liskeard Speaker, who pro- jg NOTICE OF EXPROPRIATION _ OF LAND Notice is hereby given that under and by virtue of Section: 12, Chapter 36, of the Northern Development Act, R.S.O. 1927, and Section 17, Chapter 52, of the Public Works Act, R.S.O. 1927, a par- cel of land containing 0.06 acre, known as Parcel 660, Part of Lot B, in Broken Lot 3, Concession VI, Township of Coleman, District of Temiskaming, has been epxropriated by the Honourable, the Minister, charged with the adminis- tration of the Department of Northern Development, Ontario, for the purpose of constructing a revision of the Fer- guson Highway in the Township of Coleman, Plan and description of the above mentioned parcel was registered in the Land Titles Office at Haileybury, on the 13th day of October, 1932, Notice is hereby given that all par- ties having claim to compensation in respect of the land so expropriated must file such claim with the Depart- ment of Northern Development at To- ronto, within six months 'from the date of registration of the plan and descrip- tion expropriating the land.
