The Treasurer's report showed that due to a very generous donation from the Haileybury Branch of the Society of $185.00 during November, the Shel- ter was able to reduce its deficit. He also stated he had received a very gen- erous contribution from Temiskaming Knights Templar, of $50.00 during December. This was an annual gift from the Masonic fraternity, dence of their tangible interest in the welfare of the children at the Society's home The maintenance cost per child per day during the month was shown to be 86 cents. From a consolidation of the Superin- tendent's accounts for the period No- vember 1, 1932 - June 30, 1933, and of the Treasurer's account from July 1, 1933 - October 31, 1933, it was reported to the meeting that the average ex- pense per child per day was $1.005 for the year, offset by income of 87c per child per day. , The Superintendent gave a résumé of his activities during the month and the Matron's report showed the child- ren to be all in good health with ex- cellent school attendance. The House Committee indicated their plans for the customary Christ- thas celebrations for the children at the Shelter, to which the lady members of Cobalt, Haileybury and New Liskeard would lend their assistance. 5 The Directors are especially grateful for the kindly interest which the ladies continue to show,in the children at the Shelter, and felt their efforts might be supplemented by an appeal to anyone similarly interested to become members of the Society at the nominal fee of $1.00 Membership tickets may be obtained from the Secretary, Mr, J. A. Ruttan, the Superintendent, Mr. J. R. McCracken, the Board of Directors. This, we are told, is a revival of an old custom which was carried out in the town's earlier days and is design- ed to give the kiddies some extra pennies for Christmas and to give the grown-ups a little fun and an opportunity of contribut- ing something further towards the season's festivities. Every- one is inyited to come along and bring a handful of coppers. There will be plenty of players in the game. Remember, it is open to all. The grown-ups will have to furnish the coppers, and they may be assured that there will be |plenty of scramblers when _ the | shower begins. | pe | Cash disbursement of $976,771 results from the dividend of $1.50 a share de- clared recently on the outstanding stock of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, being the first cash distribution by the com- |pany since early in 1932. LUBE GEO. W.: Approximately 78,000 people own the |Canadian Pacific Railway through their ownership of the company's common stock. Of these 35,600 live in Canada. Of the balance, 21,000 live in other parts of the British Empire, mostly in Horses Drowned: While Crossing . Lake at Night Farmer From Fabre Loses Team While Bringing Sick Wife to Hospital Here A wide crack inthe ice of Lake Temiskaming, about a quarter of a mile from Haileybury and on the roadway that has been mark- ed out from Ville Marie, was re- sponsible for the loss of a team of horses on Monday night. J. Larochelle, a farmer of the Febre district, Quebec , was driving a- cross and bringing his' sick wife to the hospital here, when the team went through the crack in the ice during the darkness and wind storm. The sleigh, one of the familiar covered ones used on the ice roads, did not break through and there was no great danger of the occupants being ¢ plunged into the icy waters, pote the team perished. Larochelle was following the line of trees which mark the road | and was apparently unaware o the crack in the ice. Those who have been driving on the lake recently have found a safe place" to cross, but as it was about 8.30 at night when they got near the shore, they could not see the tracks of other teams which, took the detour to ayoid the opening. Adelard Blanchard, Haileybury teamster, who was crossing a. short distance behind Larochelle, tried to assist the latter to get the horses out. They managed to hitch a chain to one of _ the animale and | had it partly: 4 up onto the ice when the ™thain broke and both horses sank fur- ther and had to be given up. On Tuesday morning the dead animals were hauled out and the - harness salvaged, but the loss isa heavy one. One of the animals belonged to a neighbor, from whom it had been borrowed to make the trip. Mr. and Mrs. Larochelle were accompanied by their daughter and the party spent the night in Haileybury. The crack in the ice which caused the trouble extends as far. as can be seen up and down the lake. It is something that occurs every winter, but it is seldom that a team goes through. It is said to be wider than usual this winter and it is only at certain places that there is a safe cross- ing. One of these, which is be- ing used, is closer to the Hailey- bury wharf than where the road was originally marked out. The Week's Weather | Week ending December 19th Max.
