Page 5 Play-Off Season Has Arrived in North's Hockey Liskeard Will Meet Winner of Noranda-Kirkland Series | Next Week The play-off season in hockey has arrived and soon the various group winners will be bitterly en- gaged in an effort to avert elim- ination. South Porcupine and Noranda Seniors are playing a best two- out-of-three series to determine which team shall proceed on the playdown trail, and the wise ones are inclined to favor the Quebec mining centre's crew of hockey- ists. The first game was played in Noranda last night and resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Copper Kings. The second set-to will be stag- ed in South Porcupine on Friday evening and the third, if neces- sary, on neutral ice, with both Timmins and Kirkland Lake bid- ding for the game. Kirkland Lake and Noranda Juniors will be at it this week the first game at Kirkland Lake tonight and the return contest in the Quebec town on Saturday or Sunday evening, the survivors to meet the Central Group winners, playing under the New Liskeard banner again, These will be on next week, with Liskeard very likely going to Kirkland or No- randa on Tuesday and the return game in Liskeard Thursday or Friday. The winner in this will stack up against the formidable erew from South Porcupine in home-and-home tilts. Sudbury's Cub Wolves are now waiting for the winners of the series between North Bay Trap- pers and Chapleau Huskies, be- fore sharpening up for the win- ners up this way. Silverman's lads appear to have a healthy respect for this South Porcupine squad. who scored 18 goals in their last game with Timmins. That is real scoring in any company. ; Sport Notes The second round in the Lang- Clark curling trophy, set to be played last night, was postponed for a week on account of the number of curlers attending the Toronto bonspiel. Next Wed- nesday will see the eight rinks engaged, however. Up to Tuesday evening Allie Stephenson's rink was the lone unbeaten rink in the Toronto bonspiel from the North. Peter Graham's squad won their first three games by lop-sided scores and then were nosed out by a Toronto squad, by a lone point. CLEVER FORWARD Gordon Pettinger appears to have made a permanent place for himself in the National Hockey League. When De- troit brought him up to the International League he was the leading scorer in that section, and he continues to show good form. He is a very clever marksman and a yalu- able addition to the Detroit organization. A most enjoyable curling session was held at Englehart last Friday when a rink composed of Jas. E. Grant, presi- dent of the Haileybury Club, John G. Hale, O J. Thorpe and Wm. Bulger met a crew from Kirkland Lake, skip-, ped by J. D. Macdonald, Some fun. -Hockey During the Past Week (ej --}o/-----} SSS i---- 5) I) Liskeard Srs, 8; Haileybury 5 Liskeard Seniors tigd up the group and forced a play-off with Cobalt, by defeating the local Senior squad last Friday evening in a wide-open game at the local ice palace. Liskeard had command of the situation from the opening bell, and only smart work on the part of St. Louis kept the score down. Both teams were bolstered up with Juniors, with Liskeard having the edge in that department. Liskeard Jrs. 4; Cobalt 3 Liskeard copped the group Junior title once more, when they took the Cobalt _|youngsters into camp, 4-3 last Thurs- day evening. Liskeard started off like world-beaters and had Cobalt down 4-0 early in the game, but barely lasted as the Miners came with a rush near the finish. With the material available, Coach Jack Wilder should mold a very fair sort of Junior team, which may surprise some of -the critics of the brand of hockey dished up in the group Burns, Haileybury, and Carr, Liskeard will fight it out for the goal spot, with the odds in favor of the former. For defence duty, Hughes, Haileybury, and 'Gabanni, Cobalt, are fairly certain of being chosen, with the other to be* de- cided later. Up front there "will be Sutcliffe, Holmes, Stevenson, and Jelly of the iLskeard squad, Perrier from ere, and Tessolini and maybe another from the Cobalters. | Cobalt Srs. 5; Liskeard 5 | In the first game of the play-offs on (Monday evening, Cobalt held Liskeard | on their home ice to a 5-5 draw, and were satisfied that starting off even in the second tilt at Cobalt on Wednesday | and home ice would put the series "a their pockets. The Monday night tus-| sle was a nip-and-tuck affair,, with the | score being tied several times. Cobalt seemed to have an edge, but ee | George Doggett's four from the Kirkland club could not get going | and dropped their first two starts. | Stan. Ross of Liskeard and Harry | Murdoch, Englehart, have been hitting about a 50-50 pace and may get into the prize brigade later. Charlie Austin's rink won the Vice-Skips' competition for the local club on Tuesday evening, in a ding-dong final with Heber Bri- den's four, Austin going into the last end one up, and holding it by good curling. Austins' rink went through the double-down- and-out contest without dropping a start, while Briden's men were winner's in the lower half. The semi-finals were also played on Tuesday night, so the boys had rather a full evening of it. The Legris competition at the local curling club opened last night, with eight rinks engaged. An innovation is sbeing tried in this event, with the sixteen rinks _ divided into two groups, and the : eomumenciny at 7.30 o'clock. skips rotating, that is skipping a different rink of their group in each game played, The event is due to run into March, so that local curlers are vetting a full season of their favorite sport. The draw for this (Thursday) evening is: Pickard skips J. Hill's rink, play- ing Dean's rink, skipped by Gor-]. don Ferguson. C. Austin's rink, skipped by Dr. Crawford plays Moffatt's rink skipped by Murray. Gibson skips Dr. Abell's rink against Dr. Somerville's skipped by Ray Howey Duncan skips Campbell's rink against Murphy's four, skipped by Isherwood. The games will be 10-enders: new Grand Aggregate Trophy, presented by the Macdonald To- bacco Company, to the Temiska- ming and Northern Ontario Curl- ing Association, to be awarded to the rink which wins the most games in the annual bonspiel of the Association. Nadeau, Cobalt | winger, drew a ten-minute stay in the baste for illegal work, and then had to draw three minors in the final per- iod, which might easily have meant a big margin for Liskeard. 'For the game tonight, Manager Bill Bagshaw will have St. Louis in goal; Gemmell and McArthur on defence; Valentine, Moriarity Burton for one line, with Fisher of Cobalt, Allen and Nightingale of Liskeard on the other, and Bill Douglas for extra defence or front line duty. Coach Wilder will have his best Juniors on deck and it should mix up a pretty fair evening's enjoyment. Cobalt Srs. 4; Liskeard 3 Cobalt Seniors clinched the local group title last night by de- feating their arch-rivals, New Liskeard, 4-3, after a gruelling struggle, and will now meet En- glehart, to determine the team to go on into the N.O.H.A. play- downs. The Englehart team is an unknown quantity, but may be a surprise package for the Cobalters, who by their victory last night ensured themselves of, a trip to Toronto, a well known sportsman, A. Brocklebank, hav- ing promised them the journey. if they won the group. LOCAL JUVENILE LEAGUE Saturday, February 22nd: K. of C. A. vs Tuxis B Tuxis A. vs K. of C.
