Leishman & Sutherland, Pubiishers NEEDS MORE THAN COURTESY "Try Courtesy" campaign of the Department of Highways is to be highly mended as leading to an improve- meut in motor transportation, something more than courtesy is} needed on Northern highways} before driving a car will be either] a pleasure or a safe means of} getting from one point to an- other. Not since the building of the Ferguson Highway have mo- torists had such just reason for complaint as this summer, The whole stretch has been practical- ly left without attention and as a consequence is rapidly becoming something like the old corduroy stretches that marked the earliest roadways in the province. Not only is the "washboard" condition getting worse and worse, but the roadbed is getting cut up into "pitch holes" in many places, making driving a continual risk to life and limb, to say nothing of wear and tear on the machinery. Although the com- lo the layman it would appear that the authorities are being "penny wise and pound foolish", as there can be no doubt that the longer the roads are allowed to go without attention, the greater the cost of eventually repairing them. That they must sometime be brought into something like a satisfactory condition goes with- out saying. In this age of motor transport the North Country, which produces such a great pro- portion of the wealth of the pro- vince, cannot be left to its own devices entirely, Vast sums are paid in license fees and gas taxes, apparently far out of proportion to the amounts returned in road improvements, and while we have no faith in any talk of secession from the older part of Ontario, it surely looks as though the North Country could be forced, for its own protection, to take some measures to remedy present con- ditions. FINE HOLIDAY WEATHER [he past couple of weeks have witnessed what might well be termed ideal holiday weather 1n this part of the country. Those of us who like to get out into the woods couldnt' ask for anything better, and the visitors from other places see the North about at its best just now. There are no flies to speak of, the extreme heat of summer is past and the whole country is just as nearly perfect as one would expect. _ Holiday time in the North can} be made to extend throughout| both August and September, but| in the latter month the evenings are cool and a little better accom- | modation is required, although on | the other hand, the approach of autumn lends a tang to the air| that is experienced at no other time in the year. Just at present a holiday any- where in the North Country can be made to yield the greatest pleasures that one can imagine, There is plenty of good. fishing plenty of meandering trails for those who like to wander in the woods and, above all, a pure and bracing air that never fails to ADMIRAL TAKES OVER NEW COMMAND Admiral Sir William Fisher takes over his appointment as Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth.
