ee a eC ete ees | Feb. THURS., DECEMBER 17, 1936 Thiel 18 HAILEYBURIAN ---- Asked Bottle Of _ Whisky as Pay for Cold Plunge) River Diving Act Performed by Workman When Machine Slides Off Bridge When Simon Lamoureux, half- breed workman from Honey Har- bor, Ont., dived into the icy waters of the Montreal River late last week in order to facili- tate the rescue of a seven-ton tractor, the only reward he re- quested from his employers was a bottle of whiskey. With the temperature prevailing and a depth of between 16 and 20 feet of water at the point, he probably needed the stimulant after his cold plunge. : The tractor was being driven across a floating bridge, near South Gillies, when the bridge tilted and the machine dropped into the stream. The driver, Paul| Nadeau of Cobalt, got a ducking, but was able to get out before he suffered seriously. Lamoureux volunteered to dive down and tie a cable to the machine in order that it might be pulled out later, and was successful in the first attempt. The tractor is being used by the Francoeur Products, a firm operating a small portable saw- mill for cutting wood in the aréa. It had been taken in from Latch- ford, after crossing the river on the highway bridge, and on its first trip out via the other route| two teams of horses on the bridge at the same time, but they did not! go in and there was no damage| done to the structure, as it simply) tilted and the tractor slid off.
