THURS., DECEMBER 24, 1936 dP Yel le AHAILEYBURIAN Page § Cobalt Juniors Protest Win of » . Liskeard Sextet "ttt Farmers Used Ineligible Player; Liskeard Outscore Miners by 5 to 3 Cobalt and New Liskeard Jun- iors tangled in the silver town on *Tuesday night in a fast, clean game. These two teams display plenty of opposition for the strong local kids. Cobalt 'played the game under protest, claiming Sutcliffe, who played for the Farmers for the past few season's but who is now attending college, ineligible under the N.O.H.A. residence rule. The protest will be heard in a short time, and decision given. The game started slowly, each team feeling out its opponents. McPhee passed to Thompson, who put the "Liskies" in the lead. Croteau soon evened it up, how- ever, on a pass from Holouka. The second period was wide- open hockey with both outfits going full blast. Referee Bill Bagshaw called back a Liskeard goal when one of the boys kick- ed the puck into the net. Ona nice bit of teamwork, with T. 'Croteau and. J. Gabbani, Kelly was able to put the home' town squad one up; only to have Pelkie tie it up again after a lone rush. The last frame went to Lis- keard; McPhee scored unassist- ed, Holmes netted one from Thompson's pass, then Sutcliffe finished the victors' scoring. Co- balt's line of Chartier, Mercier and D. Gabbani combined for the last goal of the game, while Mc- Phee was serving a penalty. FIRST PERIOD Liskeard _-Thompson (McPhee) Cobalt --. T. Croteau (Holouka) Penalty--Sutcliffe. CURLERS PLAY FIRST SPOON COMPETITION ON SATURDAY LAST The first of a series of "Spoon competition" at the local curling rink was' played on Saturday af- ternoon last and brought consid- erable interest among the play- ers who took part. The plan is an innovation here, but has been adopted by many other clubs and from all appearances, it is going to be a popular feature of the play this winter. The successful rink on Satur- day was skipped by Ray Howey, with Herb Pickard as vice-skip, of a point for tie. All other games will uation. None, however, have attracted such crowds as the recent events leading up to the abdication of King Edward. Day and night for more than two weeks the sidewalks in front of the Palace have been covered with anxious Londoners hoping to catch a glimpse of the principals in the controversy, and, now that Edward has become Duke of Windsor and his brother has become King George VI, crowds still continue to gather in front of the Palace taken early one morning, a few days before King Edward abdicated. gates. The locals were supposedly weakened: when three of the reg-; lars were unable to go, but filled in with Juniors and came out on the right end of the score. It was a smart contest for so early in the season, and Liskeard were rather fortunate to win out, 5-4.
