H. Belanger. There were 53 calls during the year, 23 of which were chimney fires and 12 started from overheated stoves. The greater part of the prop- erty damage came through the burning of the old mfll at the Mining Corporation property and a_rather bad blaze in the Miners' Home Hotel, the chief's report stated, and there was insurance of some $10,000 on the buildings affected. Building permits js- sued during the year reached a total value of $4,000. The council learned that there had been two false alarms rung in on Christmas Eve. These are being investigated by the trustees of the brigade, who work under an agreemnt with the council by which a stated sum is paid by the municipality each month, From this the men, both volun- Instal Board at | Local Office of Mining Brokers H.E. Cawley & Company to Have Latest Equipment and Direct Connections to Toronto The local brokerage firm of H. E. The latest teletype equipment, to bring quotations direct from the Toronto Stock Exchange, will be put in thts week, Mr. Cawley states, and about January 15th next the board will be ready. Some changes in the offices have been found necessary and these are now being made. In- cidentally, this will be the first time that a Haileybury broker- age office has been brought into direct connection with the To- ronto Exchange. It was four months ago that Mr. Cawley, a mining engineer of considerable experience, open- ed his present office, and the business has grown to such an extent that the extra equipment has been found necessary. The great activity in the Northern mining fields during the past year or two has been responsible for a like activity among the brokerage houses, and Mr. Caw- ley states that he sees no present sign of any slackening in the business.
