BEHIND EVERY CRIME CAREER LOOMS A WOMAN Behind every public enemy in his life of crime is a woman. Such is the observation of J. Edgar Hoover, head G-man, who is of the opinion that the women actually involved in crime them- selves are more vicious and cruel than most men. Among instances cited by him in illustration of his point are Katherine Kelly, wife of "Machine Gun" Kelly, who aided him in the kidnapping of Charles Urschel, Oklahoma oil man; Helen Gillis, wife of "Baby Face" Nelson and his con- stant companion during his criminal career; Evelyn Frechette, Dillinger's girl friend and accom- Bs "Ma" Barker, who dominated the Karpis-Barker gang and died with a machine gun in her ands. Considered by many Frenchmen as a disgrace to the French penal system, the dread prison colony provides very few means of escape. Occasionally prisoners do break away from the colony, but few ever withstand the harrowing journey of hardship and privation which have to be experienced in order to reach the nearest port of call, Trinidad, British West Indies. Our main picture shows a group of convicts boarding the French convict ship "La Martiniere'" en route to Devil's Isle, while inset are four men who were successful in escaping from the island and reached Trinidad Ernie Drury's "Chevies" from North Bay, who were defeated 3-2 by an all-star senior team in an exhibition game here New Year's night : in an open boat.
