O'Leary's Juniors, who scored nineteen goals in two tilts against Kirkland Lake, barely edged out Haileybury, Central Group standard bearers, 4-3, in the first of their home-and-home clashes here last night. The Young Copper Kings went on the attack with plenty of zip and power in the first frame, get- ting two smart goals, without a reply from the homesters. The first was on a play Lachance to Paul Courteau, who had Belanger at his mercy. In the late stages of the period, Paul Courteau got a neat pass from Lajoie right in; close and made sure. In the middle canto, both nets had narrow escapes in the first few minutes, but the real excite-| ment started when Haileybury was awarded a penalty shot when Newton, Noranda goalie, nursed the puck too long. Short took the shot and blazed one in ret the Noranda netman never even glimpsed. This goal was nullified two minutes later when Stuckey drew a penalty and Noranda put on the ganging act, Lajoie net- ting on a pass from Briand. And five minutes later, with Short in the cooler, Stewart received from P. Courteau and beat Belanger for the visitors' final tally. Noranda made the mistake in) the final period of dropping back} to protect their lead, and Hailey- bury presesd on the attack, with Randy Hughes notching from Stuckey at the five-minute mark. The locals kept up the pressure and after thirteen minutes of the period had gone, Stuckey notched from Holmes, just as the referec | rang his bell for a foul committed by Gould, Noranda defence man. The locals played swell hockey in the last frame, but did not check back or cover up well in the first two frames, and only super-smart goaling on the part of Arnie Belanger kept the Que- bec boys from notching several more counters. For Noranda Paul Courteau, Lajoie, and Lachance were the outstanding players, with Stewart and Briand looking good in spots. All the local lads gave their best, with Belanger, Hughes, Holmes and Hume showing most class. The return game is being play- ed at Noranda on Sunday, and if the Haileybury squad can start in then where they left off last night, they just might cop the honors. Stick in there, fellows, and keep going. Rev. Father Pelchat, formerly of Haileybury, accompanied the Noranda boys, several of whom can speak very litle English, and Father Pelchat acted as interpre- ter hetween Coach O'Leary and the boys. If a third game is necessary it will be played on neutral ice, on Saturday night. SPORT NULtS | In the tuning-up game between Haileybury Juniors and Liskeard Seniors, the teams representing the Central Group in the N.O.H. A. play-offs, the older lads took the decision, 2-1 in Cobalt Mon- day night. There was no scoring in the first twenty minutes, and all the net finding was crammed into the middle frame, with Jun- iors drawing first blood on Stuc- key's goal. Seniors replied from the stick of Bob Poppleton to tie it up, and Thibeault rammed in what proved to be the winning counter. Juniors drew down all three penalties imposed by Pap. Hylands. South Porcupine was shunted out of the Golden Group Senior play-offs on Monday night, when Wright-Hargreaves defeated the Huggins-coached South Enders, 4-2, and Haileybury basks in the limelight, as Stan Lemon for the winners, scored two goals and as- sisted in a third. This leaves the Tekima Red Flyers and Lake Shore's Blue Devils to battle it out tonight and Saturday night for the right to meet the Nickel Belt winners (probably Frood) for the right to represent North- ern Ontario in the Allan Cup ser- ies. Lake Shore defeated Teki- mas in overtime Tuesday night, 3-2, and the series between these two teams will pack the Kirkland arena to the rafters. Emmett Smith's rink will like- ly leave Sunday evening for the Dominion Curling championships to be played in Toronto next week. All winners eligible to enter the event, except Quebec, have been declared, and the sister province entry will be decided by this evening. With the experience gained in his two previous tries at the Canadian curling crown, Emmett should prove _ trouble- some to the best. and the North will be pulling 100 ner cent for the Haileybury quartet to come through on top.
