Frood should take the 'Peggers and the game with Wembley will be the "crooshial" one. The hockey season is already lapping over into the baseball show, and the fans have decided to stay away in droves. Frood's feat of winning the Allan Cup makes it the second triumph for N.O.H.A. teams in the Association's history, Soo Greyhounds going through + to win in 1924. The Memorial Cup rested in N.O.H.A. territory back in 1932 when Sammy Rothschild took the Sudbury Woofers down the long trail to victory, and the Cubs have been in the finals twice since then under the guiding hand of Maestro Max Silverman. 4 Temiskaming and Northern On- tario Railway The Nipissing Central Railway Company announce Effective APRIL 24th Inauguration One Way Second Class Fares based on 2%c per mile applicable between local points on the T. & N. Chicken House Damaged by A defective chimney flue was responsible for.a fire which dam- aged the Holditch building on Albert Street, formerly used asa bakery, but now converted into a chicken house. The firemen were forced to lay a line of hose some 900 feet in length, as two hy- drants were frozen up. The dam- age was to the building alone, all the fowl having been removed when the blaze started. On Monday evening a new cure for chimney fires was tried out when the brigade got a call to the home of I. A. Lytle, Amwell St. A powder known as "soot blast" was used and Chief Watson says it worked splendidly. It is put in the furnace or stove, left fora short time and then the drafts are opened. It not only gets rid of the blaze quickly, but cleans the chimney as well, according to the chief. Municipal Affairs Outlined At Board of Trade Dinner (Continued from Page 1) words, you are individually con- tributing to the taxes of those not able to pay, the sum of $9,000. Due to the greater improvement in collections this reserve has been set at $6,000 this year and is one of the reasons for a lower tax rate. Government Subsidy. As you know, the Provincial Government is contributing one mill to this year's tax levy. This appears to be a generous act, but it is poor compensation for the increased taxation due to lower govern- ment grants to schools, etc. Our share of this subsidy will be $1,200 or at the rate of .45 per person. Spread over the total Provincial assessment the rate per person will be approximately $1.00, but Toronto will benefit to the extent of $1.50 per person. This shows the great gain to cities who have large industrial assessments. Separate School Act. I will not dwell upon this as the Act has been repealed. It is interesting to note that under the changes in this Act, nvither class of school very much, although the Bank Canadien building is now assess- ed at 4-5 public school and, 1-5 separate school, whereas the lat- ter school received all its taxes previously. No wonder this Act was repealed. Tax Rate. The public school rate this year will be 58 mills, and the separate' school rate 80% mills. It has been possible to set a lower rate in spite of higher grants required by the high school Board to offset unexpect- ed reductions in theirgovern ment grants last year, and the rate would have been further reduced had it not been for this item. It costs approximately $100,000 to run the town for the year; of this amount the municipal | receive $26,500; the schools $30,- 1500; debentures and_ interest, $26.500; Social service and relief $5,500; reserve for uncollected taxes $6,000. Since several de- jbentures will be-fully paid up j within the next three years, you ;may look for a lower rate in the near future. Debentures.
