The dead are Peter Oulette, 37, and Victor Faubert, 16, both of Tim- mins, and Mr. and Mra Arvi Maki, are the injured. Along the highway just three quarters of a mile west of Night- hawk Centre, two cars met head- on with a terrific impact. The entire front section of the Maki car, a,new model, was entirely wreckMd. Oulette's car, an old model}Ford roadster, was smash4 ed Seyond repair. P »ovincial police officers said to. y that it was apparent Ou- ct 2 was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the accident. The road was 34 feet wide at the point where the mis- hap occurred and there were wide shoulders on both sides--Timmins Daily Press. Oo------ WANT AIR SCHOOL Already possessed of a promise from the Hon. Charles S. Power, Minister of National Defence for Air, that the establishment of a Flying Training School in North- ern Ontario would be considered should the department consider amplifying its present program. T. J. Miron, president of Kirkland Lake Board of Trade. will com- municate with the minister. and remind him that this area should be considered in view of the min- ister's recent announcement of Montreal that the present pro- gram will be doubled. On September 3, T. J. Miron, president of the Kirkland Lake 3oard of Trade, addressed a me- morial to the minister urging the advisability of locating an air training school in the vicinity of Kirkland Lake--Kirklafid Lake Northerh News. FREAK PUMPKIN Planted as a pumpkin seed, but maturing into something that looked more a squash, a vege- table curiosity was brought to The Speaker office last week-end by Mrs. Leo Eckensviller of Dy- mind township. The exhibit had 1 vine growing out of each end and it had an opening on either side, one of the triangular in shape. The curiosity was about 20 feet from the roots of the vine with pumpkins between it and the roots, while the vine on the othe side had blossoms on it. Mahaffy stated that it was practically settled that the First Battalion would be routed through North Bay and would enjoy a stop-over here.--North Bay Nugget. ae BAND FOR RECRUITING Attached to the Sault-Sudbury Regiment for the duration of the present recruiting drive, the De- pot Pipe Band from Military District No. 2 headquarters arriv- ed in Sudbury this morning. Members of the pipe band were mental barracks at Minnow lake, where they will be given quarters for the duration of their stay here The band consists of 17 men, al- though earlier reports had indi- cated that it was much larger. The Depot Pipe Band which is in reality the official headquarters band for this military district, |will play a leading role in the concert to be held at Queen's | Athletic Park.--Sudbury Star. Cobalt Kiwanis Club Has Successful Bingo Party The bingo party staged on Fri- day evening last by' the Cobalt Kiwanis Club was a great success according to members of the committee in charge. It was ad- vertised asa "chicken bingo" with chickens as the regtiar prizes, and during the evening 25 birds were disposed of, as well as five turkeys given as the prizes for special games, in which there was an entry fee in addition to the general admission which, covere: the chicken games. T was a big final game for 3 prize to wind up the evening. This prize was won by Miss Mu- riel Leblanc. Several Haileybury people at- tended the event and a couple of them were among the night's winners, Wm. C. Inch securing one of the turkeys and Mrs. C. Lowery a chicken. Boyd, Haileybury BEARS STEAL GRAIN FOR WINTER USE, BUT LAIR WILL BE RAIDED Bears raiding grain fields in the Earlton district and purloin- ing therefrom convenient stooks, unconsciously are sealing their uwn later doom, according to a story coming out of that section of the Temiskaming countryside this week. The bears, reported as quite numerous, took the grain back into adjacent territory where they propose making their winter quarters, and apparently the stooks were designed as suit- able covering for the hibernation now drawing nearer.
