THE BOARD OF TRADE In his inaugural address to the coun- oi Mayor H. E. Cawley spoke about the local Board of Trade, which has not heen very active since the start of the Present war. His Worship thinks it should be revived and is convinced i @ be made an important body in the life of the community. This seems} Perfectly logical. The Board has done! Zood work in the past, under the handi- |' @» of a small membership, and it could dco much more with greater support i the business men and _ citizens ge lly. Por the information of His Worship an' others who may be interested, we can say that there is still a central or- de tion, with officers and executive cc ittee, and there would be no great di Ity in effecting a revival of its ac' ities if sufficient interest is taken an + certain measure of support given {t i; somethine that should be consider. ed, at any rate, he writer has held) the position of secretary for a number ot years and the records, etc., are in thi: office and available at any time. | + TOMES SessocoesssssssssSsssssssssssssssss si 84 Chie aie ? Noted in Passing # i # R tt3$ $ , st week we bragged a bit in this column about the fine winter weather the North had experienced, while the southern part of the province was suf- fering from blizzards and heavy snow. This week the picture has changed in our district and at the time of writing we are having the worst*storm of the winter, with both snow and wind, and roads and streets are in bad shape for travelling. However, these storms are hound to come sometime during the winter and the more of them we get through early, the better conditions are likely to be towards the end. KOK KK We would like to give some space to th urrent nutrition campaign of the Wartime Information Board, in which fs given much helpful information on the way to keep fit by proper eating. There are many useful hints in the publicity material sent out from head quarters, but the difficulty lies in the fact that they are all too long for re production in the limited space of the average weekly paper. Locai affairs have to receive first consideration and there are many calls of that nature, es- pecially in these times of stress. KKK War news these days continues to Prove encouraging, and while the end may be a long way off, there is no doubt that when it does come it will be the kind of winding up that we can all rejoice in. There are no indications of anything in the nature of a com- promise and there is nothing but final and complete yictory that can bring the conclusion to hostilities. The Al- lied Nations will emerge victorious and the result will be a much better and more peaceful than that which followed the last great war. world condition Local residents are again reminded that the Aid to Russia Fund is still open and contributions may be made at the Bank of Nova Scotia. =| Haileybury Histor y Items from the Files of The Haileyburian of 15, 10 | | and 5 Years Ago | | Fifteen Years Ago ! Shown here are four United Nations diplomats who arrived re- cently at the Canadian Pacific Railway's Windsor Station, Mont- real, to inspect war production plants in the Montreal area. They are, at left, Dr. Edouardo Grove, Chilean minister to Canada. Liu Shih-shun, second from left, re- presenting Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek's government in Canada, expressed satisfaction at the vast quantities of wav inaterials pour- ing from Canada's war plants, and thinks if Hitler could see that part of Canada's war effort viewed by himself and the three other mem- bers of the Foreign Diplomatic Corps, accredited to Ottawa, the German leader's hair would turn even whiter than it is reported to be. Fedor Gusev, third from left, representative of Soviet Russia, showed great interest in a display of Russian war posters now in Windsor Station concourse. Dr. : Frantisek Pavlasek, Czechoslovak minister, looks to the day when "made-in-Canada" war materials will have helped free Czechs from Nazi slavery. Arrangements were made for the four diplomats to visit the Canadian Pacific shops which for many months have been turning out a steady stream of "Valentine" tanks.
