THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1945 THE HAILEYBURIAN Page Five of Used Clothing Liberated Europe Needs Great Quantities; Plan Coast-to-Coast Drive Canadian people are to be ask- ed to contribute 10 million pounds of used clothing to help relieve the desperate plight of the men women and children in the coun- tries of liberated Europe, in a big National Clothing Collection that is to be held from October Ist to An organization has been formed, with Wm. Massey Borks, L.L.D., as chairman and Hon. Thomas Vien, P.C., K.C., as vice-chairman. Headquarters is in Ottawa and the collection will be from coast to coast in Canada. It is estimated that it would be physically impossible for Cana- dian manufacturers to supply even a small fraction of what Canada's share in the plan should be. Therefore, -the people at large are being appealed to to provide from their own supplies all serviceable used clothing that they can spare without replace- ment, and in this way help tc clothe the unfortunate victims of the war before winter sets in There will be only one Nationa Clothing Collection this year. it is pointed out, and it will be direct- ed by the Canadian United Allied Relief Fund. There will be further informa- tion given before the drive strats but in the meantime, all of us can be preparing to some extent by looking over our own supplies with a view to doing all in our power to further this work. The need in the liberated countries is a very pressing one, and Canada's part in the work of caring for these unfortunate people should be well in the forefront among Notes of the North Many Bush Fires There was the usual accompa- niment of the recent warm, dry spell, and 18 bush fires were re= ported in the district during the past week The largest north of Lowbush, had to be reached by plane, and burned over 40 to 50 acres before it was checked.
