Fleming, one of the old timers of the district, is in town from Toronto for a few days. BORN--On Monday, June 2nd, 1947, to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hurteau (nee Lillian Brown), a daughter. Miss L. Chenier, formerly of Haileybury, is in town from Lat- ulipe,, Que., for a visit with Mrs Geo. T. Hamilton. Harry Sankey of Kirkland Lake was a Visitor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Joy for a fey days last week. BORN--At Wellesley Hospital, Toronto, on Tuesday, June 10th. 1947, to Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Rooke, a daughter. Milton Stiles has returned to his home in Arnprior after a visit in town with his sister, Mrs. I. A. Lytle, and Mayor Lytle. Mrs. Arnold Cooke was among the delegates from St. Paul's W. A. who attended the Diocesan conventon held in North Bay re- cently. Buddy Eckensviller, a student at the Kirkland Lake Collegiate Institute, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. Eckensviller. Mrs. Albert Can and little son were in town from Timmins to spend the holiday week-end with Mrs. Cain's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Caldbick. Friends in town learned with' interest of the birth of a son re- cently to Mr. and Mrs. Anderson of Montreal. Mrs. Anderson is the former Winnifred Hincks, who spent her girlhood here. A meeting of the Haileybury branch, Canadian Red Cross So- ciety, has been called for Mon- day next, June 16, at 7.30 p.m., in Hotel Haileybury. All members are requested to attend if at all possible. Miss Lillian Valentine is home from Montreal to spend a holi- day with her mother, Mrs. M. Valentine. She is accompanied by Miss Mabel Karn, also of Montreal, and they will spend three weeks in town. MORTON The death last Saturday, June 7, 1947, of Mrs. James T. Morton removed another of the earlier residents of Haileybury and the district. Mrs. Morton passed away in the Toronto General Hospital, where she had been a patient since March last. Her health failed during the winter and she was taken to the hospital where she died from pneumonia. She was 72 years of age. Born in Cornwall, England, Mrs. Morton was the former Bea- trice Annie Hooper. She came to Canada at an early age and on November 13, 1896, was married to Mr. Morton, at Lennoxville, Que. They observed their golden wedding anniversary at their home on Cecil street last Novem- ber, and at that time Mrs. Mor- ton was in fair health. Mr. and Mrs. Morton first came to this district over 40 years ago. They had their home at Giroux Lake for a time, later moving to Silver Centre and from there to Haileybury. Mr. Morton is a former chief of police of Hailey- bury. Surviving Mrs. Morton are her husband and three sons. The sons are E. L. Morton of Trenton, Ont., James T. Bingham. Interment was _ in Mount Pleasant cemetery. A large number of friends of the family were present to pay their last respects and to extend their sympathy to Mr. Morton and the family. Many floral tributes, tes- tified to the esteem in which the deceased was held in the commu- nity. MRS. CHARLES PIRIE The funeral of Mrs. Charles Pirie, who died on Thursday morning last, was held on Friday, June 6, from the United church. North Cobalt. Interment was in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Hail- eybury. : The late Mrs. Pirie was bornat South March, Carlton township, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dennison, on March 19, 1879. She married Charles Pirie of Strichen, Aber- deenshire, Scotland, on October 26, 1898 at Cashman Memorial church, Hull, Que., and for 12 years resided in Eardley town- ship in Quebec, moving to North Cobalt, in 1910, where she has re- sided ever since, except for nine years, when the family resided in Lorrain Valley. _ The late Mrs, Pirie is survived by her husband, and her seven sons and two daughteres: Wil- liam T., Larder Lake; Charles G. and Harold S., Toronto; Russell H., Lorrain Valley; Mrs. Gordon Loach, Kirkland Lake; Clifford. Florence and Gordon, at home; and Lloyd E., of Matachewan. survived by three sisters, seventeen grand- one great-grand- also three brothers, children, and child. The funeral service ducted by Rev. C. W. Bingham, from the United church, North Cobalt, to Mount Pleasant ceme- tery, Haileybury. A short ser- vice was held in the home for the immediate family. Members of the L.O.B.A.175, of which the late Mrs. Pirie was an honorary and only charter member, met at the church, and conducted the service at the graveside. Tul- loch's Funeral Home had charge of the funeral arrangemnts. Pallbearers were six of the late Mrs. Pirie's sons. Among the out-of-town mourners attending were Mrs. Pirie's sisters, Mrs. J.
