The bears, how- ever, are not escaping so easily and last week-end Foster Rice re- ported he had bagged the second bear for the spring season. The animal was a fair-sized one, he said, and he had no great diffi- culty in getting a shot. although others in the neighborhood had hunted without success. The area to the west of Haileybury, in hoth Bucke and Firstbrook town- ships, appears to be the favorite feeding grounds for the bears, and each spring the farmers lose some of their stock, usually sheep. Calves have been killed on some occasions as well. LOCAL FIRE BRIGADE WILL HAVE TEAM IN COMING TOURNAMENT The Haileybury fire brigade will have a team in the big tour- nament of the Temiskaming Fire- men's Association on July 1. A bus has been chartered from the MclIsaac Transportation company and the smoke eaters will leave early in the morning and return late at night. There will be a sufficient number of men left to take care of any emergencies that may arise, the chief says. The boys had a workout on Tuesday evening for the first time and practice will continue on every suitable opportunity be- tween now and the big day. They are determined to give a good ac- count of themselves and hope to win one or two of the valuable prizes that are always provided for these tournaments. The town of. Mattawa is the latest community to report ser- ious flooding, with the water reaching the main streets.
