f ern Po THURSDAY,: JUNE 7th, 1951 THE HAILEYBURIAN Page Three Englehart Wins Opening Game of Central Group Unsteady Fielding and Erratic Pitching Combine for Railroaders' Victory Haileybury fastballers opened the season much the same as yast year, when they took a shellack- ing from the Englehart crew, by a 13-0 count. last night at public school grounds. A.combiination of too much McKinnon and unsteady fielding in pinches spelled doom to _ the local lads. "Sonny'" Jim had the game in hand all the way, and when he slackened off near the end his support was good. The little fellow from North Bay fan- ned eleven of the locals and al- lowed only a pair of bingles, not really hit with much vim. He only walked one man, the first to face him in the opening frame. One the other side, Eddie Bet- tiol opened by getting the side out in the first inning, without trou- ble, but then his own wildness, a quartet of bingles, two errors and a couple of passed balls in the 'second frame netted the visitors ten big, juicy runs. Doug Har- grave relieved and went along to the sixth inning before allowing the railroaders any further tallies but then two walks an error and two bingles brought in Engle- hart's final three runs. Doug Hargrave and Len John- son, following one another in the hitting order, singled to centre and created the only threat to the vis- iting pitcher, who bore down struck out two men and forced the final hitter in the frame. Haileybury gave up nine safe- ties, 8 walks and erred an equal number of times, to practically present the contest. } The homesters were minus two of their best players and shortage of manpower prevented the coach using pinch hitters or making substitutions. Look for a pig improvement as the season rolls along. They play at Latchford on Friday evening and have Co- balt as guests here Sunday p.m. _ The line score: 3 : toh: Englehart 0100 0 0 3 O--13 9 Haileyby. 00 00000--02 e. Knox, rector of St. John's Anglican Church, and his wife are having more than their own share of sickness in their home at present. Peter, their six- year-old son, developed red meas- les recently, and soon after, the twins, Elizabeth and Diana, three years old, came down with the variety known as German. Almost as soon as they had recovered from these, they contracted the more severe red type, and a few days later, 18-months-old Eileen was the victim, All three little girls are quite sick, and Mr. Knox remarks "our house is not peace- able", However, he says, the can- ary is still healthy,--Temiska- ming Speaker. --_o----_ WOULD LEGALIZE 'SWEEPS' Councillor Leo Del Villano set off a flurry in council Monday when he introduced a resolution calling for Timmins to endorse a petition to the Federal govern- ment asking for legalizing of sweepstakes, with the proceeds going to hospitals, homes for the aged, and children's id.
