Douglas went to Ottawa at the week-end to be present at the graduation of her daughter, Miss Janet, which took place at Ottawa Civic Hospital yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Currie of Sudbury were in town late last week for a visit with Mrs. Cur- rie's aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Sutherland and Mr. and Mrs. P. Grozelle, and other friends. Mrs. Thyra Fancy, who recent- ly underwent a serious operation in Misericordia Hospital, has re- covered sufficiently to be taken to the home of her parents, Magis- trate and Mrs. Atkinson, where she is recuperating. Lieut. John Wood of the Sal- vation Army will be leaving the district in the near future for a post not yet determined. He will hold his farewell meetings on Sunday, June 24th: Haileybury at 11 a.m., and Cobalt at 7 p.m. Lieut. Wood has been here since October. 1949, Rey. John Watson and Mrs. Watson of Gravenhurst were in town on Monday to attend the Ordination services in St. James' Church, Cobalt. New Liskeard : Ontario Phones 442 and 442B Inspects Cadets of Three Towns on Parade Here North Bay Pipe Band Leads Corps on March Past; Boys Congratulated by Officer Local residents saw an inter- esting display on Friday evening when the annual inspection of the Cobalt-Haileybury-New Lis- keard Cadet corps was held at the local Armories, and which in- cluded a march of the cadets through a part of the town, led by the Canadian Legion Pipe Band of North Bay. The inspecting officer, who took the salute during the march past, was Major F .G. C. Darton, M.B.EA, The cadets, formerly sponsored by the high schools in the three towns, are now attach- ed to "C" Company of the Algon- quin Regiment and the corps is No. 2344. The ceremony included a demonstration of the use of mortars and other weapons by the boys, and the inspecting offi- cer complimented them on the progress that had been made since they were taken under the wing of the Reserve Company. Captain of the Cadet Corps is Bill Herron of Haileybury, with Lieut. Ralph Fraboni of Cobalt as second in command, The ser- geant-major is R. O'Grady, also of Haileybury, and the chief in- structor of the corps is Major I'. L. Charbonneau of the Algon- quins. After the inspection and par- ade had been completed, the Pipe Band went to Misericordia Hos- pital, where they gave a concert for the benefit of the patients there and in St. Mary's on the Lake Sanitorium. This part of the program provided a special treat to those who are compelled to spend their time in the institu- tions and was greatly appreciated A detchment of 13 cadets from the corps will go to Ipperwash military camp for a training per- iod from July 26th to August 14. They will receive instructions in vehicle driving and other phases of military training. HOLD BIRTHDAY PARTY AS SURPRISE FOR MRS. B. HARLTEY A surprise party was held on Monday evening, June llth, at the home of Mrs. B. Hartley, the occasion being her birthday. Mrs, J. .A MacArthur, a friend of long standing having known Mrs. Hartley in Scotland before coming to Canada, presented her with a pretty scarf on behalf of those present. Mrs. Hartley re- sponded in her capable manner. A dainty lunch was served and a birthday cake with candles add- ed a bright spot to the party. Mrs. Bradley pinned a corsage on Mrs. Hartley. Dies In Hospital After Air Trip From Labrador Late Wilmer Ross a Member of Old Haileybury Family; Funeral This Afternoon Wilmer Burton Ross, eldest son of Mrs. H. M. Ross and the late Mr. Ross, old residents of Hailey- bury, died suddenly in St. Luke's Hospital, Montreal, on Sunday night, June 10th. He had been taken ill at his work with an iron mining company at Seven Islands Labrador, and flown from there to the hospital, according to word reaching his mother and other members of the family on Mon- day. Mr. Ross had been home for a visit in April and had left May Ist to return storeman for the company, and at that time had been in his usual health. Born at Nipissing, Ont., on Oc- tober 21st, 1906, Mr. Ross came to Haileybury with his parents at an early age. He received his education in the local public and high schools, and from 1922 until a short time ago had been associ- ated with the Northern Canada Supply Company, with the excep- tion of four years spent in the army during the Second World War. He was unmarried. Surviving Mr. Ross are his mother, six sisters and three bro- thers. His father, the late Hugh M. Ross, died in August, 1950. The sisters are Mrs. Bernice Mc- Kinley, Hamilton; Mrs. Ted Mor- row (Gladys), Yakima, Wash.; Miss Alyce, at home; Mrs. Ken. Buffam (Erline) Cobalt; Mrs. Gilbert Doyle (Joyce), Montreal, and Miss Marna, with the ONR at Kirkland Lake. The brothers are Ronald, Yellowknife; John D., Montreal, and Ivan, Sydney, N.S. With the exception of Mrs. Mor- row and Ivan, all were expected to be home for the funeral, which is being held this afternoon, The service will be held in St, Paul's Church at 3 o'clock, and will be conducted by the rector, Rev. Canon Goodier, be in Mount Pleasant cemetery. The community joins in extend- ing sincere sympathy to Mrs. Ross and her family in their sor- TOW.
