THE JET AGE While the President of Avro Canada was addressing the Cana- dian Club, a Canadian jet fighter could take off from Malton, flip over the Royal York Hotel, straighten out for Uttawa, encir- cle Parliament Hill and be back before the speaker was finished. This example of jet speed is not a fantasy but a fact. The other day a jet pilot, at an alti- tude of eight miles from the earth and on a clear day, saw Montreal and Toronto at the same time. The Jet story is a story of magnificent Canadian accomplish- plishment and Canadians need never again regard themselves as members of a branch office in the international aviation industry. We have arrived, firstly because we have developed and produced a Canadian jet engine of tremendous power; secondly have developed and produced the first jet transport liner in the Western hemisphere, and thirdly, we have, developed and flown a long-range, all weather, day or night Canadian jet fighter. Avro's new engine, the Orenda, is referred to with superlatives by aviation authorities. Our jetliner is the envy of the transport world. Our jet fighter stands supreme ameng its type of aircraft. Avro Canada can quickly shat- tr the illusion that Canada's young university graduates must look south of the border for a fu- ture career. This may have been true in the past, but no more They have a young chief designer who turned in such a fine job ou our Jetliner that he walked off with the Nobel prize in aviation --the Wright medal marking the first time in history that the Un- ited States has lost the coveted award, The time of airraft consisting of a frame and an engine and propellor is no more. The de- signing of Canada's Jetliner took some 700,000 manhours--more than is required for such a large building as Toronto's Bank of Commerce. Our designers issued over 50,000 sketches and drawings for. the Jetliner's construction They used over one and a half million square feet of blueprint paper before the aircraft ever flew. More engineering worl was required to design its electri- cal system than would be needed for a 20-storey building. It has seven and a half miles of wiring, over 16,000 electrical connections and over twelve hun- dred other electrical items--and has more instruments than twen- ty Diesel locomotives. A typical fighter of World War Il had a fighting altitude of 25,- one did 400 miles an hour. The new one does 650-plus. Unlike the old type, the CP-3Q0 ='th ra- dar and other special equipment is available round the clock in any weather. The United States Sabre has a relatively limited range. In de- veloping the Canadian jet fighter the CF-100, the vast distance in- volved in the air defence of our country had to be considered-- range operation and still capable of terirfic speed was re- quired. Immediate take-off at any time, in any weather, the ability to pick up the enemy on the pilot's own radar system, be guided to the enemy, guided in the firing of weapons, equipment to tell the pilot the result of the encounter and permit him to re- lay the result back, protection during the encounter, the advan- tage of manoeuverability--it was a tall order but Avro Canadian can well be proud of it's twin- engined CF-100, No other jet fighter in the world can meet all its specifications, long DINNER AT MASSEY'S --The voices of protest raised when Vincent Massey became Governor-General fell on deat ears but the prediction that the office would soon have = meau- ing for Canadians is evident even now. The lights seem to have gone out in Rideau Hall and it is unfortunate that at the same time an outstanding Canadian isto be target of such ridicule. Mr. Mas- séy is having quite a time im- pressing upon his fellowmen that he is something apart from the ordinary. The Governor-General is reported to have had a small dinner party in his railway car in Toronto and a printed seating plan was presented to the four guests by an aide, This, in itself, is com- mendable as considerable confu- sion might have ensued as_ to where to sit, but it seems that one of the guests got lost in the freight yards and arrived forty minutes late and since the Gover- nor-General would not appear until all the guests were assem- bled, he must have had a trying time as anyone knows it is a feat in itself to get into one of Cana- da's railway cars let alone hide from your worst enemy. We cau only hope that the guests were properly impressed when he made his entrance. On second thought Mr, St. Laurent would have been well advised to have left Port Hope's sons at home and moved Mr. Abbott and his staff into Ri- deau Hall--they must need alittle elbow room for all that figuring.
