Be- cause of a cancellation of its con- tracts with England, the company which produces 16,000,000 splints a day for the United Kingdom, will shut down completely within the next three weeks and more than 100 employees will be out of work Several hundred others, bushworkers an@ farmers who ordinarily supply the Canadian Splint Company with logs have already been affected. The Splint Company which has operated here since 1942 has been one of the main sources of em- ployment in the tri-town area since it began producing match splints .All of these are exported to the United Kingdom. There- fore, it is now without a market. "We will definitely re-open again", said William Miller, Com- pany representative and acting- manager in the absence of Mana- ger Cecil Sharpe. now recovering in the General Hospital from a motor accident, "It may be a week or it may be six months de- pending on the British market." With production now at a low point in the distric't other big industrial plant, Hill - Clark- Francis, it is unlikely that the workers will be able to find em- ployment there. Although the men are working steadily now at Hill-Clark's, it has closed * twice for two-day stretches in recent months because there was little work and no new contracts.
