At this moment, the attention of the whole world is focused on the choice of these two great par- ties to represent them, We are at once horrified, amused, disgust- ed and admiring of the spectacle. lo date it is evident that the American people are in no mood to be tampered with. Their faith has been badly shaken in the past year and they will insist on a deep responsibility to democracy. Now more than ever before, the Presidency calls for character in leadership. Of Truman it may be said that "where he failed many would have succeeded; where he succeeded many would have fail- ed" but in the final analysis, he lacks that one great Churchillian talent to lift a great nation of people up and on. One can almost sense the desperate cry across the whole nation for something more than Truman--a true leader, a leader of -ciharacter who will create popular confi- dence,, a man of prudence, pati- ence, a quiet tongue and the fore- sight to look before leaping. A man then, who Will give the West a positive faith, a great overriding cause which we are all for, heart and soul, and not just this--this blind futility. Such a man is born once in a century. Could it be Eisenhower? CITIZENS COMPLAIN Citizens were unhappy 'this week about the rising clouds of dust on town streets During the dry weather complants came from all directions; Latchford street residents were particularly concerned, At Graffe's, where traffic is periodically re-routed because of of the roa d program on the highway, the neighborhood was vociferous in its remarks--how- ever, Monday the Department came through with a layer of cal- cium chloride and happiness pre~ vailed once again. Investigation reveals that New Liskeard has made arrangements with a contracting firm to oil the streets at a cost of $186.00 per mile--over and above this is the hauling of sand so that the ex- pense involved would be out of the question for Haileybury, In the meantime, the town is endeavoring to get a supply of calcium chloride which citizens may purchase at a cost of roughly $2.50 a bag to treat the roads fronting their homes. Reynolds D.S.O., M.C., Chairman of the O.N.R| and the Hon. William Griesinger, M.C,, V.D., ONR Commissioner discuss- ed several matters of importance to the town of Haileybury with attending representatives of the Chambers of Commerce, Mayors and clerks of the Tri-Towns. Mayor AH. Cooke suggested the building of a subway at the railway crossing on Browning street. The dangerous level cross- ing has been a source of concern for many years and recently the OPP pointed out to council that the tool shed obstructed the view of motorists. The railwaymen agreed to investigate the recom- mendation and take constructive action. With a view to developing the the construction of new docks. they would prefer that private enterprise be induced to take an interest in the potentialities of the Lake as a tourist attraction. Civic-minded citizens would like to see the building of a new dock south of the airport with facilities for repair and maintenance of boats so that safe and easy boat- ing would be available to tour- ists. The ONR officials stated that they would advise the company's publicity director to go all out in attracting tourists to this area this summer and winter. The Northern Ski Club where a new chalet will be in use this winter, has already established itself as an attraction for winter visitors and the director will investigate other interests here that might promote this industry through their advertising channels. We cannot enjoy true freedom as a people unless we insist upon personal freedom, to the downfall of all freedom, every time we ask Government to plan or regulate our lives. We lose personal freedom an Collective bargaining ; the right to dispose of our seryices and our property as we see fit; the rightsto freedom of assembly, speech 2 and worship--all these we enjoy because freedom-loving mdi- viduals fought and, necessary, died for them.
