Page Four THE HAILEYBURIAN THURS., OCTOBER 23rd, 1952 Boy Scout From Temiskaming Enjoy "Camporee" A large party of Scouts from all parts of the district attended the Temiskaming Scout Jambo- ree held at Fairy Lake on Thanks- giving week-end. The camp was under the direction of District Commissioner Robert Sharpe of North Bay. Unfortunately, the representa- tion from Haileybury was small as an epidemic oi colds kept many of the boys at home. Scout Lead- er Bill Nauss and Scouts Charlie Camsell, Billy Tyson and Pete McGinley represented the Hail- eybury Patrol. Arrival at the camp was slat- ed for Saturday and.all day long the tenting space hummed with activity as the boys prepared for their over-night camping. Immediately on debusing, the troops paraded and a kit inspec- tion was held, followed by a period of work, erecting tents and digging garbage pits. Knot tying, life-line throwing and nature study were:parts of the program until supper time, when the boys built their fires and cooked their meals, After supper, the Scouts met around a council fire and learned the Gilwell buzz call, The day's activities completed, the boys prepared for bed. Lights Out sounded at 10.30 p.m. After the boys retired, Leaders met for a brief pow-wow. Reveille roused the camp at 6.30 a.m. on Sunday, and aftera wash up and breakfast came de- votions. The Roman Catholic beys left to attend service in New Liskeard while the Protestant group attended the service at the camp. (he Leaders held camp inspec- tion at 9 a.m. and this was follow- ed by an "Adventure Trail." [The Scouts wish to thank those who gave their time and the use of their cars and trucks to provide transportation for the boys and their eqiupment, THE MOUNTAIN ASH FAIRY he a ET, -------- They thought me, once, a magic tree Of wondrous lucky charm, And at the door they planted me To keep the house from harm They have no fear of witchcraft now, Yet here I am today; I've hung my berries from tbe hough, And merrily I say "Come all you blackbirds, bring your wives, Your sons and daughters too; The finest banquet of your lives Is here prepared fo you". Council members felt that the three-mill levy, necessary to pay the municipality's share of the cost, was excessive for the ser- vice rendered. It was also felt that a more favorable service could be ob- tained in its stead with a grati- fying saving on taxes to the in- . dividual. Excessive travelling expenses necessarily incurred by the Unit, make the charges far in excess of the services ~rendered to a township situated on the outside fringe of the territory covered. This would only apply ina township with a low assessment resulting in a large increase in the mill rate, said Council mem- bers.
