He found the record to be over- whelming. Within the past two years Betty Jean Hagen, violinist, Lois Marshall, soprano, Margue- rite Gignac, soprano, and Cler- mont Pepin, composer, have won awards in cities as far afield as New York, Paris, London and The latest distinc- tion was gained by Ray Dudley, brilliant young pianist from Bow- manville, Ont., who on October 3rd won the first place medal in the Geneva, Switzerland inter- national contest for pianoforte performers. Dr, Johnson, -the Conservatory faculty and all ser- ious Canadian musicians , an music lovers are indeed proud of the achievements accorded the young artists. There is enormous significance attached to these awards. Canada is growing up musically! These artists matched their talent with the best. musicians from many countries with long established musical tradioions and high stan- dards of musical education, _and have come' out on-top. Canadians need no longer feel self conscious when the American or European talks about music in Canada, and particularly, what kind of musi- cians Canada is producing. It has in the past been too com- mon a practice for our young musicians to look towards the United States, Great Britain or continental Europe as places to receive the best in musical train- ing. All these award winners were trained in Canada and are graduates of the Senior School of the Royal Conservatory (now a part of the Faculty of Music in the Conservatory's reorganization plan).
