~THE HAILEYBURIAN HAILEYBURY, ONTARIO THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4th, _1952._ Subscription Rate: $2.00 per year Vol. 48; No. 39 Temiskaming Health Unit ' Plans Program of T.B. Testing The Temiskaming Health Unit is planning a program of Tuber- culin testing both elementary and secondary studnets in Hailey- bury. Pupils in the Public and High Schools will be given this test on Monday, December 8th, while the students in the Separ- ate School] will be given this test in the near'future. The children will bring home a card for . the parents' consent for the test and we hope that all parents will co- operate by signing the consent form. This test consists of inject- ing a small about of Tuberculin solution into the skin of the forearm. The injection raisesa very small bump like a mosquito bite which disappears in the course ofan hour or so. If the test is negative no further reac- tion will occur. If the test is positive, some redness and swell- ing appears at the site of the in- jection in about 48 hours? The Tuberculin solution used in the test does not contain any germs. It is a somtion of the protein of the germ which causes Tuberculosis. If the child has been exposed to a case of Tuber- culosis at some time in the past and has taken some of these germs into his body this fact will be demonstrated by a positive re- action to the tuberculin test. This does not mean that the child has tuberculosis, but merley de- monstrates that he has been ex- posed to someone with the dis- ease. Each child who has a posi- tive reaction will be X-rayed at St:. Mary's on the Lake Sana- torium and the parents will be advised of the X-ray feport. Where a positive reaction has occurred, the other members of the family should also be X- 1ayed_ All these X-rays are made possible by the Christmas. Seal Fund. This program of tuberculin testing is being done in effort to further decrease the incidence of tuberculosis It is the hope that all parents will Unit in giving their permission for tuberculin testing.all school children.
