George Belland, former Hail- eyburian, who has been a resident , the past town of Kapuskasing for three years is visiting in this week, Miss Suzanne Smith arrived home this week from St. Mar garet's School to spend ~ the sholiday season with her parents Mr. and Mrs. T. Smith. There is to be a special Christ- mast service in the Albert Gospel Hall featuring the Girls' Choi and selections by the Sunday School] members at 7.00 o'clock on Sunday evening. Mr. A. Hasselbring and Miss Nancy Hasselbring leave this week for the States where they will visit with Mr. and Mrs. Rein- hart Hasselbring in Lansing and with Col. and Mrs. Gayle Madison in Virgina during the holiday season. On Friday, December 19th at & p.m., the Senior Sunday Schoo} of the United Church, acting in conjunction with the Senior Choir will provide an evening of sacred music and pageantry in the Church. The choir is pre- senting selected carols. The Sun- day School is dramatizing the Christmas story. Funeral Services Held on Tuesday for North's Sheriff Funeral services were held at St- Paul's Anglican Church on Tuesday afternoon for the late George Caldbick, whose death occurred suddenly at his home on Browning street on Saturday morning. He was eighty-tour years of age and would have been eighty-five in January. Born in Hastings County. Mr Caldbick began his career in 10- ronto, where he served for eight years with the police force. In 1905, he came to Cobalt, where he had accepted an appointment as a provincial constable. He continued for a time in that ca- pacity during the active days of Cobalt's mining boom before re- ceiving an appointment as chief of the Provincial Force in North- ern Ontario. Later, he became an inspector at a time when there was only two of those officers-- one covering Southern Ontario and the other in the North Coun- try. His duties took him to all parts of the vast area under his supervision. With the formation of the District of Temisk ming in 1912 Mr Caldbick was appointed She- riff. He conducted the affairs of the district from the Court House here until his retirement in 1935. He was a_ member of St. Paul's Anglican Church. He w. a member of Temiskaming Lodge A. F. & A. M., New Lis- keard, Silver Lodge, AF. & A.M Cobalt and the Royal Arch Chap- ter and Past Preceptor of Temis- kaming Preceptory here. He was at one time an active member of the Haileybury Curling Club. His wife the former Catherine M. Smith predeceased him in 1950. s Surviving him are three dau- ghters, Mrs. C, E. Taylor (Mar- yvaret) of Timmins, Mrs. A. E. Cain (Jane) of Timmins, Mrs. J H. L. Brennan (Helen) of To- ronto; and four sons: S. A. Cald- bick, Q.C., of Timmins; Joseph of Seattle, Washington, Dr. Geo es =. W. Sanderson, Dr. W. C. Some: ville, Dr. J. C. A. Crawford, S Atkinson, A. Throop and Taylor Pipe. Active pallbearers were Staff Sergeant R. W. Crozier Russell Murphy, Graham Hennes- sy, Terry Smith, J. M. Shouldice of Haileybur yand Harold Low- ery of New Liskear. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery Beloved by all who came te know him, the passing of George Caldbick will be keenly felt bya host of friends in Northern On- tario. His own community has lost a (good neighbor and a good triend. Rotarians Entertain Kinsmen, Wives at Xmas Party Rotarians entertained the Kins- men Club of Haileybury and Co- balt on Monday night at the Hotel Haileybury. Among the one hundred and fifteen to enjoy the evening were the wives of mem- bers of both Clubs, friends of the Rotarians, president of the Chan- ber of Commerce, J. E. McDon- ough and Mrs. McDonough and Mayor Arthur H. and Mrs. Cooke Dr. Crawford started the Christmas sing-song off witk "Jingle Bells", and led the guests in the singing of Christmas carols throughiout the dinner hour.
