YHURS., OCTOBER 22nd, 1953 T Hee = HAWLEY BU ReeAN Page Three Department Savs Ducks Plentiful But Hard to Get Duck hunters in Southern On- tario are going to need, the three extra days' hunting provided this year by the Minister of Lands and Forests, Hon. Welland S. Gemmell. That is, if they're go- ing to get their bag limit of eight ducks per day. Early shooting this year hasn't been too good. Preliminary counts by Lands and Forests officials indicated that birds were more plentiful than usual this year, hence the longer hunting season. But the birds have been farther out from their fall feeding grounds and the off-shore hunting conducted from blinds and hides has seen many irate hunters trying to stretch their shotgun charges to 'impossible lengths to reach them. The difficulty experienced in Southern Ontario, where the sea- son opened on October 3, has been reported also in the north, where hunting has been under way since mid-September -- Septem- ber 19 or, in the Hudson Bay district, September 15. Most favored hunting localities in Southern Ontario seem to be the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. There is reasonably good shooting in the marshes off Rouge River, Frenchman's Bay and Pickering Beach, within half an hour's drive of Toronto, too. Most of the ducks shot in South- ern Ontario are spoonbills, blacks and mallards--and they travel at anywhere from 55 to 90 miles an hour when they recognize danger below. With the difficulty of gauging distances at such speeds few birds are killed at more than fifty yards. There is quite a difference in decoys these days as compared with the decoys the average farm youth used to whittle out from a convenient block of pine. ~ In the old days they did a fairly ar- tistic job, at that, with paint and for weight, a rock or a_ bolt off an old farm machine.. Today, plas- tics and various other new sub- stances have made possible de- coys weighing ounces instead of pounds and exceedingly attrac- tive. : Generally, good retrievers are Coming to Haileybury Lieut. Shot sizes are BB, 2, 4, 5, 6 or 7%. The 12-gauge shell is made also in three-inch length but it isn't absolutely necessary. ..Nor is it thought advisable to use the extra-~power- ed shells in most old shotguns. Thieves Miss Best Case of All in the Darkness Local police are investigating two robberies which happened this month. One occurred at the Beatty Washing Store where thieves removed the glass and entered by the back door to steal supplies. Last Wednesday night, Bright's Wine Company transport had it's load considerably lightened when thieves jimmied the side door open and made off with thirteen cases of assorted cheaper goods but missed a case of delectable champagne.
