Denholm ot Parry Sound visited last week with their son, Rv. Andrew T. Denholm and Mrs. Denholm. Mr and Mrs. Fred Allen and daughter, Nancy, returned last Saturday from a two weeks' va- cation in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. Mrs. A. T. Humphreys spent Thanksgiving week-end in Sud- bury visiting with Mr. and Mrs. R. Labine and Miss Barbara Humphreys, Lieut. B. Craddock left for Toronto this week to attend the annual Congress Gathering of Salvation Army Officers from Qubec and Ontario. Mrs. W. C. Thuerck is holiday- ing in the States and is visiting with her daughter, Miss Audrey Thuerck of Albany, and Mr. and Mrs Joseph Behin of Buffalo Mr. and Mrs. Roger Savoie (nee Yvette Leveillee) are proud to announce the birth of their son Denis, on Thursday, October 15th at the Misericordia Hospital. Both are doing well. Mrs. A. T. Humphrys left on Tuesday for Sherbrooke, where she will visit for a few days with her daughter, Mrs. R. Garafolo and Mr. Garafolo. She was ac- companied by Mr. and Mrs. Les- lie Humphreys. td. Elk Lake District Pr at Englehart Man Victim of Shooting on Hunting Trip Robert Smith, 38-year-old En- glehart man died in the Engle- hart hospital last week, the vic- tim of a tragic hunting accident Mr. Smith, with his two hunt- ing companions, Stanley Pahual- ski, 41, of Evanturel Township and Nick Nychuk of Englehart was hunting in Pacaud Township about 14 miles from the Railway Town. The three were sitting in the car when Smith who was alone in the back seat handed his gun to Nychuk to be unloaded as Smith knew little of firearms. Nychuk's own rifle was in the front seat of the car with the butt resting on the floor under the dash and the muzzle resting against the front seat. Nychuk's 30-30 rifle suddenly went off and the bullet tore through the back seat and enter- ed Smith's chest. His compan- ions rushed him to the Englehart hospital, arriving at noon where Dr. J.J. Higgins removed the bul- let and gave blood transfusions, ; but he died at 4:15 p.m. Mr. Smith is survived by_ his wife, the former Isabel Bowers of New Liskeard and two children Ann, seven, and George, two. An active worker in community affairs, Mr. Smith was a steward ef the United Church, member of the Public School Board, the Kinsmen Club, the Independent Order of Oddfellows and the Canadian Legion. He served overseas during the war asa sergeant in the. Forestry Corps Shortly after returning from over seas, he established his imple- ment business in Englehart and built it into one of the largest farm implement businesses in the istrict. WEEK IN COURT The partridge season ended ast week with seven more hunters paying fines in Magis- trate Atkinson's court. Jack Ryder of Fruitland paid $10 and costs for hunting with a repeat- and Harold Skinner of James were fined for having loaded rifles in their car. W. Charles Arnott of Schumacher hunted two ruffed grouse out of season and paid $20 and osts. Failure to pay unemployment insurance contributions from July, 1951, to June 1953, cost Percy Hume of R.R. 1, $25.00 and costs and a week to comply with the regulations amounting to $94.48. A charge against Fred Eden of Toronto for driving without due care for others was withdrawn. Cane For the same charge, Daniel Kirbride of Englehart paid $10 and costs. Paava Erkkila of Chapleau and H. M. Somerville of Kenabeek were fined for driv- ing without licenses. Failure to stop at a through street in Englehart cost Jules Bolieau of Earleton $3.00 and costs. For driving while he was intoxicated. There were thirteen members and one visitor present to hear Mrs. M. Johnston, president of Elk Lake district tell of the convention held in South Porcupine. The convention will be held in Hailey- bury next year. Mrs. Johnston informed the members on the antique farm im- plement museum which Miss E. Lewis, director of the Women's Institute Branch, Home Econo- mic plans to establish and pointed out that the co-operation of veryone in stocking such a mu- seum will be needed. A coronation cup. and saucer was presented to Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. M. McNeil received a birthday cup and saucer. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Arthur on November 12th.
