THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10th THE HALLEYBU RIAN CGE. That this week we are indebt- ed to Mrs. C. H. Liddicott for asssting us in our report on the J.0.D.E activity last week... .and while we were telling her whata lovely tea day Saturday was, our thoughts quite naturally turned to community spirit and Mrs. Liddi¢ot observed that "the splen- did support given to this effort proved this quality to be alive throughout the district".... and to everyone of you who helped gain the goal....many thanks from every officer and member of the Haileybury Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. ORO That we told Wilf Moriarty we were running a threé-inch head on the Cobalt election "Haileybury Takes Over Cobalt Council" but his last words "Take it easy, girlie' led us to the wis- dom of our issue this week. FORO That this week's little story is about a seven-year-old boy whe woke up to all the election talk on Tuesday morning to hear his mother say "Mr. Day is Mayor' to which he said, "Gee, does that mean he's going to be in the Post Office ?" OnE That Christmas shoppers will find the local stores are open all day Wednesday now ..otherwise hours are as usual with mer- chants planning, of course, to be open day and 'night during Christmas week. OIC That there is an excellent book display in the United Church this week which will be of inter- est to parents, teachers and child- ren....books of -Bible stories for children, reading on family worship and many others may be ordered. set GOIOK That it was fun and games at the Auditorium on Sunday when »--------Mreand Mrs, J-Harling, Kirkland Lake, brought their stage and puppets to the school to give the local group some help and _ in- Home for Christmas SAVE TIME! Re That we wanted to know how it felt to be the first woman in the District of Temiskaming to serve on a jury... Mrs. N. J. McAulay made no secret of the fact that she had butterflies in her tummy with the thought of being invol- ved in such an imposing drama with the guardians of the peace -.-in fact, she admits to having ten fingers crossed in the hope that she too would be challenged and leave the Court House a free woman....but she assured us after the first day that she sur- vived the ordeal nicely and thinks every woman who is free to do so should answer the call to a jury because every good citizen should know how the wheels of justice turn. soo That we like the story of the gentleman who wasn't too inter- ested in the election on Monday until he walked down town that day...caught his heel in a crack in the cement and went to the Legion Hall on fire .... and th remarks of those winners...: asked' to what he attributed 'his success, one came back with "A good looking wife and no one knows me from a hole in the wall" "Gee, I nearly didn't make it" .. .."You just know about voters on voting day"....and one good night- which took the form of "See you on Day night." CR That we believe in fairy tales and this weather reminds us of Ivy L. Wallace's little book for children "Pookie Sets the World Right"....Pookie got mad at Winter and called him some very bad names and so Winttr went away and from then on there -was nothing but trouble with only three seasons....today we havea lovely bouquet of English Dian- thas, a perrenial which is bloom- ing profusely at the home of Mrs. M. P. Wright.. this royal purple esed was sent out from her sister in England. two. years ago.... John E. Dunn is the proud owner of a garden which is brightened with a pink snapdragon in full bloom....the grass is green as~ springtime and lucky Mrs. Tracey Ross has proved it by bringing us not one, but three, healthy four leaf clovers...Mrs. W. C. Martin picking parsley from her garden on the Lake Shore Road and li- lacs may burst at John H Mur- phy's at any moment .... mean- time people are fussing about a green Christmas ... curlers are having nightmares of no ice... skiers are wondering....yes, we need Pookie to bring Winter hack. IOI French Canadian wood carvers mostly use such materials as basswood, white and yellow pine and walnut.
