Authorized as Second-Class Mail, Post Office Department, Ottawa GOOD PREVAILS This week, the annual appeal for funds for the Temiskaming Branch of the Children's Aid So- ciety is under way with an _ob- jective of $1,500.00 from Hailey- bury. Although the Government and the municipalities assume the financial burden of lookng aiter wards of the Society, there 1s the far greater task at hand of preventing children from becom- ing wards, Every effort must be put forth to assist the less fortunate to keep the home to- gether and if all else fails, » find good homes for children, the full responsibilty for this work falls on your shoulders. During the summer months alone, 37 families involving 70 children went to the Society for assist- ance while service to 18 families, comprising 42 children was dis- continued. Fourteen children were admitted as wards and 12 weer placed on adoption-proba- tion, It is readily apparent then that we have an obligation to discharge to the Society--no one can blindly close their eyes to the distress of others. Your canvasser will appreciate your contribution -- large or small. The campaign is directed by J. E. McDonough and the fol- lowing citizens have offered their services to him: Mrs. R. Moris- sette, Mrs. G. Cassidy, Mrs. A. Pringle, Mrs. S. Bourget, 'Mrs. O. Childs, Mrs, O, E, Walli, Mrs. A. C. Dempster, Miss M. Melisek, Mrs. S. Forneri, Mrs. L. Dupuis Mrs. R. Fortin, L. Consider, for instance, the sidewalk that, until very recently pursued its casual way up the gentle slope of Temiskaming Street. Built originally in 191C by Mr. C. A. Foster--at his own expense--, repaired from time to time, but never entirely replaced, it served us well. It survived the fire--through the ingenuity and fortitude of the late Mr. Christopher Mann, whose hop-vine clad cottage nes- tled half-way up the hill, Halted by his challenge, in the cold, gray dawn of October 15th, 1922, the local "Safety Patrol" found him with shot-gun and _ water-pail, his keen grey eyes alert for marauders of incipient blaze.
