Receiving Home at Dane, One of C.A.S Many Services Not long ago, a wealthy Am erican offered a large sum of money for the construction ofa modern orphanage Fortunately, no one took him up on the of- fer. The orphan's home as we used to know it has almost dis- appeared in civilized countries --and no one regrets its pass- ing. But even with a _ policy of placing homeless and friendless dependent children in foster o adoption homes, most Child- ren's Aid Societies in Ontario find the need of a special shelttr where children may be cared for temporarily until suitable fos- ter homes can be located. The Children's Aid Society in this district is fortunate in haviing an ideal receiving home at Dane, and ideal houseparents in' Mr, and Mrs. Konrad Hollander who have taken scores of youngsters to their hearts since they became "Mummy" and "Daddy" to the children at Dane, The Hollanders, who came to Canada from their native Latvia four years ago, face all the head- aches and heartaches of average parents--and then some! For tunately, they are devoted to children and possess an under- standing which enables them to make their young guests feel at at home within minutes of their arrival. Mrs._ Hollander isa warm, motherly person whom no child can resist. Mr. Hollander is a favorite with the boys and spends many hours guiding them in handicrafts and games. Mrs. Hollander's mother; Mrs. Minna Seinbrecher, is "grand mother" to all the youngtsers at Dane and, although she speaks no English, she and thé children share a perfect understanding. Designed as a temporary shel- ter for children who will Jater be placed in private homes. Dane also serves as a home for those children who have been sosbadly disturbed by their experiences before coming to the Society's at- tention that they cannot adjust readily to family life. Such children are a special concern of beautifully achieve wonderful results in re-{tions during the annual appeal storng these frightened and*un+ happy children to a more opti- mistic outlook on life, The num ber of children cared for at any onetime at Dane varies from 10 to 15. During their stay, all re- ceive careful medical and dental examination new clothing and and habit-training if needed. When it is remembered that many children admitted to the care of the Society~by the courts are poorly-nourished ,dirty, sick and untrained, the importance of a bright, cheerful and warm re- ceiving home canbe readily seen. Friends of the Society are in- vited to visit. Dane and_ look through the facilities available there. Visitors are asked to contact staff members at -- Kirk- land Lake or Haleybury offices to arrange visits.
