Sparks Drive to Light Town at Christmas At Christmas time last year, it was suggested to the Cham- ber of Commerce that the folks at home should follow the ex- ample of those in the sunny southern States and dress the town up -- really dress it up at Christmas time. Particularly attractive is the rigging up of lights underneath shrubbery so that the whole front of the 'ouse is suffused witha cheery greeting. This was tried by residents last =-ar and created a lovely effect. So get your thinking cap on and make Haileybury the brightest stop of all for Santa Claus because the Chamber of Commerce is offering three prizes -- First, $15.00, second $10.00 and _ third $5.00 for the best effort by citi- zens, Business stores are not eligible. : "OBITUARY LISCUMB Many friends attended the funeral service last week in Lat- chford for Mrs. George Liscumb who lost her life in a tragic car accident at Temagami. After the family service at the homie, ser- - vices were held in the Latchford United Church. The service was conducted by Rey. G. Brown of Cobalt and Rey. Munro of St. Catharines (R ev. Munro and Mr. Liscumb were overseas together during the last war.) Six brothers acted as pallbear- ers, Lorne, Wilbert, Tom, Nor- man, Elmer of Latchford and Art of St. Catharines. The remains were brought to Haileybury for burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The sympathy of this commu- nity goes out to Mr. Liscumb and his daughter, Janice of St. Cath- arines and to Mrs. Liscumb's family, ' AL That our faith in humanity has been restored...througn the thunderclouds straight into the brilliant sunshine with Jimmy Hill of Kingston, former princi- pal of the School of Mines, who writes "The Haileyburian com- plains in this morning's edition, that it is not getting enough co-operation from its readers in the way of supplying news items Well, I just happen to have one for you .... Miss Mariylin Hill a former pupil of the Haileybury Public School (1939) has com- pleted her training in the Kings- ton General Hospital and has passed the Registered Nurses' examinations, She has also join- of the staff of the hospital and is employed in pediatrics section" ....thank you Mr. Hill and con- gratulations to Marilyn.... we particularly like to keep track of our school students at home and abroad. KEE That Mrs. Mary Patterson wife of President Gordon Pat- tersno, whose name is synony- mous with the Stratford Festival was in town last week-end to book the Canadian Players in appearances throughout Northern Ontario....this, of course, wil! be Canadian Players' first appear- ance in this country and Mrs, Patterson is delighted with the warm hospitality she has receiv- ed and with the enthusiastic re- sponse to the idea ... plans are just in the embryo stage and you will be hearing more from us _.. meantime the New York Times has this to say ... "The Canadian Players are a recently formed company of seven men and one woman whose verve and versatility, not to mention act- ing ability, are leaving viewers breathless and excited." peered That the Strand Theatre is running a free cartoon show on Saturday morning. December 4 ...show starts at 10:00 a.m. so spread the good word to all the kids in the neighborhood... .it's open house at your favorite the- atre. Dead That as far as we are on- cerned the highlight of last week was the vaeldictory delivered by Ruth Clarke at the High School commencement... with perfect assurance she delivereda wonderful speech written by herself...there wasn't a mom- ent's hesitation and is it any wonder her school mates elected her for the honor? eeenee That it's the best news we've heard in years and it's Cinema- scope moving into t he Strand Theatre in the very near future ...and it's just a rumor but a good one that "The Robe" will be one of the first pictures to come here early in the New Year. Abraham's store last night. Thursday They gained entrance to the store through a basement win- dow facing on the north lane beside the building and made their way upstairs. According to A.
