Three other_events are sponsored by the club itself with Canadian Copco contributing. Play will begin on Friday "Rockets" Lose Finai Game in Close Series 5-3 Haileybury's colorful Rockets bowed from the Kirklond District week at the Kirkland Commun- ity centre, as the powerful Le gionaires man-handled them 5-3 before 700 Juvenile fans. The defeat wrote finis to the puck-chasing of a game group of Earlton lads whom fate and love of hockey had thrown together into a smooth skating, pouthfu hockey machine well named the "Rockets." Ardent fans in all communities, Kirkland included, had named the boys from the Central Town as the team to beat. (but lack of finesse around both nets, and the reserve power up the Gold Belt way, spelled defeat. The game was one of the Roc- kets' poorer showings and the spirited Legion crew took advay tage of their every lapse. It would be impossible to pick any stars in the Rocket line up. They played with determination but their passing plays were out of gear and their fighting spirit al- most throttled. The Legion's big Ron Bracher started the first period off in high gear, worrying Gignac in- cessantly before blazing one into the net at 5:26. Less than two minutes later he slid a pass over to Zawaly for score number two. The Kirkland crew was playing heads-up hockey and the Central Towners were unable to keep the puck from their own end. Roger Fleming worked hard and combining with O'Grady and Connelly marched in on Rowe to bat ina loose puck, which the goal judge claimed he did not see. This might have been the Rockets' undoing. From that moment on it appeared they were running into "Referee" trouble and the "breaks were not with them. At 18:10, Lewis beat Gignac on a low drive that was labelled. The period ended 3-0 with the Rockets facing an uphill fight. In the second period the Roc- kets outscored the Legion squad 2to 1 and showed slight snatches of gathering momentum but the fine coaching of Kirkland's Bill Hamilton paid off with the Le- gionnaires keeping the Rockets Min. Perform in "Pop Friend in Death of Association Ho.d Concert" The Sigh standard established by the Haleybury and New Lis- keard Figure Skating Clubs was maintained at their "'Pop" con- cert on Saturday night in the New Liskeard Arena, A "sold- out" house enjoyed the entire program, much of which was car- ried out without benefit of extra- vagant costumes. Contrary to some doubt, the simplicity of numbers, if anything pointed out the remarkable advance of the young skaters from the toddlers to the senior group. Those from Haileybury _ per- forming in special numbers were Barbara Camsell in a lovely Hungarian nmber, Carol Jen- Kins and Pat Arnold in a rhy- thmic black and waite pair number, Linda Grozelle ond Joan Murphy in a skating demonstra- tion, Leith Hellens, Wayne Rus- sell and Gordon Stollery in Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod. disorganized. Bill McKnight cut the score to 3-1 as the Paiement boys combined fast to feed Billa passout right on Rowe's doorstep and he slapped it home. Play opened up slightly and flaileybury hopes soared. Num- erous fans shouted encourage- ment and the referees began to 'ake a verbal beating. Right in the middle of all this Zawaly douced cold water on the bid, completely outsmarting Gignac. jerry Paiement passed to cousin Laurent and batted home the re- bound on the latter's shot. The period ended with Hailey- vury trailing 4-2, The third, penalty studded per- iod will long be remembered by Kocket foliowers. It wasa do or die attair and nerves were at (pe breaking point. Thorpe put the Legion away out in front and all breaks appeared to be funning the wrong way. An- other goal had been disallowed by Referee Taminnen and the dead game Rockets were at the boiling point. Tempers began to flare though players kept the hockey clean, and the referees slowly lost control of the game. At 13:33 big Dave Wilson was banished for a so-called spearing etfort. Bedlam broke loose and when O'Grady was banished for slapping the referee with tae flat of his stick, numerous Hail- €ybury supporters took to the ice or five minutes the crowd wit- nessed a verbal debate between referee .and players, which end- €d up with two game miscon- ducts, fan intervention and the appearance of Provincial Police. When the smoke had cleared each side took to the issue at hand short two players. The "Rockets pressed hard and suc- " eded in closing off the scoring at 19:36 with Connelly beltng home McKnight's pass. In true sporting fashion, the Rockets swarmed to the ice to Congratulate a great Legion hockey machine, showering extra praise on a sensational little net- minder named Rowe, Rockets are more The than TRIPS EACH WAY EVERY DAY LEAVE NORTH BAY 9.10 a.m. 4.25 p.m. 11.59 p.m. Standard Time Single Return $7.15. $12.90 UNION BUS TERMINAL NORTH BAY "PHONE 101-2-3 Sydney Beanland Sydney Beanland, one of Haieybury's best known miming ming figures died at his home on Am- well Street on Friday morning.
