Page Two THE HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAY, .JULY 2lst, 195: THE HAILEYBURIAN Founded by C. C. Farr in 1904 EDITORIALS The Toronto Star is, of course, very mad at the Toronto Telegram for stealing Marilyn Bell, And the Tely is very anxious to keep Marilyn's Channel swim a strictly Tely story. Reading the two papers leaves the reader more than a little confused. The Star seems to suggest that Mari- lyn is the prisoner of a sinister group of Tely promoters, who are quite pre- pared to force her into the water at gun point despite her ill health. fhe Tely indicates that Miss Bell's throat ailment isn't too serious, and that just as soon as she is fit she will plunge into the waves for the honour of Toronto, Canada, and the Toronto Tely. it would aot be surprising if Miss Bell got thoroughly fed up and decided to take up golf and leave the Channel to Florence Chadwick. All Canada wishes Miss Bell the best of luck. But it might be a good idea if the circulation managers of the Toronto papers were forced to do a little Channel swimming too. A dash of cold water might make them realise that Marilyn belongs to Canada, and should not be regarded as a promotion stunt, complete with ghost writers, rumor factories, malicious gossip and all the rest of the hoopla at present surrounding her. In fact, a really sporting proposi- tion would be for Harry (Toronto Star) Hindmarsh, and John (Tele- gram) Bassett, to do the swimming and let Marilyn write the story. That would be a yarn worth reading. A recent news story from Kirkland Lake reported that efforts are being made there to persuade some pulp company to construct a small pulp mill in Teck. Another report from New Liskeard states that the equipment has been sold in the old splint factory, but no one has yet bought the empty building. While we admire the efforts being made by Teck to attract new industry to the north, we cannot help thinking that the now empty splint factory vould be a good site for a pulp mill. With a railroad spur already con- structed into the plant, and situated as it is on Lake Temiskaming, surely the splint factory would be an ideal location. It is unfortunate that none of the three local chambers of commerce are particularly active these days. But someone should do something towards getting the splint factory back into production. The plant provided valuable employ- ment for many local men and women, and its closing has been a severe blow to the district. It seems remarkable that a building of its size and poten- tiality should stand empty for so long. The attraction of industry to the North is a subject on which chambers of commerce, local councils and poli- ticians are always prepared to make long speeches, but when the record is examined, nothing very much seems to be accomplished as far as the Tri- Towns are concerned. Kirkland Lake and North Bay have aggressive chambers and councils that are constantly, and very successfully, plugging for more industries for their areas. But the Tri-Towns generally get nothing. A concerted effort by the three chambers of commerce to sell the splint factory to some industrial organization would be a step in the right direction. After all, if the Tri- Towns can't attract industry to locate in a ready-made building, complete with rail and water facilities, what hope have we of attracting industry at all? THE LETTER BOX The Editor, The Haileyburian, Haileybury, Ont., Dear Sir: I bitterly resent the suggest- tion ~that Haileybury should provide fire protection for Bucke township. Our fire insurance rates are the lowest in the North because the taxpayers in Hai- leybury have been paying out good money for good equipment Even if we have two fire en- in the event of a major fire, half the fire department will be out of town. North Cobalt should be orga- nized into a municipality. At Present the North Cobalt vote controls the affairs of the town- ship as a whole, and the farmers and rurual residents in Bucke don't get any representation at all. I suggest that it is about time that North Cobalt stands on its own feet. It should be organized Temiskaming Construction Limited Phone OS 3-5702 Sudbury, Ont. I always considered the Hai- leyburian to be typical of our grand old town, and don't see why some stranger from Cobalt should take it over and ruin it, Yours faithfully DISGUSTED, Akron, Ohio The Editor, The Haileyburian, Haileybury. Ont., Dear Sir: May I congratulate you on im- 'provements to your paper. I hay® been reading the Haileyburiay for many years, and have had it sent to me in all parts of Canada. I extend my best wishes to the new Haileyburian, and hope that you will grow stronger through the years. H. J. Majorsky, Letter to the Editor-- Haileybury, July 18, 1955 The Editor, The Haileyburian, Haileybury, Ontario Dear Sir: As a property owner in Hail- eybury and Bucke, and as a for- mer member of the Bucke coun- cil, may I take up space in your paper to appeal to Haileyburians to cooperate with Bucke in get- ting fire protection for 'the township. Apart from purely financial considerations, humanitarian reasons would dictate some ch- ange in the present system We cannot wait until half of Bucke We can give quick service in supplying custom made rubber stamps...at budget prices. " THE HAILEYBURIAN HAILEYBURY, ONTARIO SOEee ACCURACY ' Sc SS is burned down, or until two or three children are burned to death. The attitude of the present Bucke council is hard to under stand, It is obvious that a fire truck based at North Cobalt would not be much more use than our present abrangement with Cobalt. And the cost of maintaining and training a fire department would be very heavy The Bucke council, it seems: is far from eagar to deal with Hail- -eybury, although the majority of ratepayers in Bucke have made it clear that this is what they want. It is perhaps not surprising that Bucke council is failing to take any decisive action, They : haven't even managed to get the tax bills out yet, although we are nearly in August. Perhaps this is because they hate to admit that the tax rate will have to go dp another ten or more mills as a results of their policies. I believe that every citizen in Bucke should make it clear to the Bucke council that they want proper fire protection, and that an arrangement with Hail- eybury is the most sensible and logical thing, and wiil bz +o the benefit of both communities. And | sincerely hope that citiz- ens of Haileybury will support the proposal. Yours faithfully, Leo Deraiche.
