Bh. Page Four THE HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 1955. Playground Activities By Suzanne Lecky This is our last column of the summer as we will be finished at the park on the 3lst. We are grateful for Mr. Hunt's kind words in last week's paper, and would like the parents to know that we've enjoyed working with with scores of 67 and 72 on the their children every bit as much as the children have enjoyed the park. We wish to thank all those who so _ kindly donated to our bazaar last Wednesday. The pro- ceeds covered most of our day to Winner of the doll, don- day colouriul big expenses clowl ated by the Rotary Club was Mrs. J. E. Leveille of Hailey bury who bought her tickets from one of our regular at- tenders. On Friday evening, August 26, we are holding our closing night for the parents and friends at se- ven thirty. Mr. Timmins has gen erously given us the use of the Blue Room in the Haileybury Hotel for this purpose. The pro- gram will consist of square danc- ing, skits, rhythm band, and pre- sentation of field day prizes. In closing, we would like to thank members of the Recrea- tion Commission, and Mr, Tim- mins, Mr. Gough, Mr. Hunt, and parents for their support and encouragement. We use a suction type pin holder, which is heavy and won't rust, to hold the flowers correctly. Bill bought several from our lo- cal florist. We painted our screens last week-end, Black on the inside and white on the outside, so that we can look out but no one will be able to look in! Hope you'll join the Lovett family in our crusade to make our beaches safer and cleaner. One of the great hazards, as we've learned from painful ex- perience, is broken glass. Our slogan is--"Keep bottles off the beach." To help us do that sun- tan oil and now even insect re- pellent come in a small pliable plastic tube. They are easier to carry and, of course, there's nev- er any danger from broken glass. ° A film of soap or oil on glass will allow you to remove any paint that splatters on windows when you paint the frames. We learned the hard way! We've put a cylinder made out of tar paper around our new- ly transplanted plants. This keeps away cut worms until the plants are established and eli- minates a second planting or spreading poison bait. Bill has imstalled a beverage rack under the kitchen sink to store bleach, soda, starch bottles etc. It's so much neater and eas- ier for me to pick out the bottle I need. No doubt your youngsters, like ours, will pick up their share of thorns, prickles or thistles this summer. A completely pain- way of removing them from the skin that sometimes works is simply to place a piece of adhesive tape over the offend- er, pull off quickly and, presto, it's removed! This hot weather it's > difficult to keep tht house cool, unless you're fortunate enough to have air conditioning. For cooler sleeping we place our fan at the open window along with a bowl of ice cubes. Bill says: "A wise woman puts a grain of sugar into everything she says to a man, takes a grain of salt with everything he says to her." less SUMMER CARE OF DAHLIAS period in dahlia production is during the months of July and August and neglect at this time may greatly curtail the Amount of bloom obtained in the fall. The dahlia is essentially a cool weather flower and every effort should be made to have as many blooms as_ possible open The critical * during the fall months. The chief enemies of the dahlia are virus diseases and insects but a great deal of the so-called bud blast in this plant is mainly due to tarn- ish plant bug injury. [ YOu LOST TEN POUNDS \----]..
