The sinners usually get more recognition as their activities seem to have a more direct impact. Haileybury is no exception and currently the ladies of the Canadian Legion Women's Aux- iliary are more than a little mad at some of our local sinners. It seems that the ladies had one of the latest types of can openers in the kitchen, lt was -the gleaming, double hinged, triple action, quadruple gadget kind that would delight any housewife's heart. It must have delighted someone else too, as it recently disappeared, togeth er with the screws that attached extinguisher off the wall. The ladies were just recover- ing from the shock, when they found that someone had also stolen a large and expensive fire extinguisher ofl the wall. The next report of sneak thievery came in from an irate lady who suffered because she has a kind heart. It seems that she saw a little girl walking through a heavy rainstorm. The lady ran out and put a raincoat on the child, telling her'to re- turn it later. She hasn't seen the raincoat since. It really isn't surprising that the world is full of people who are alleged to be hard-hearted and cynical, With so many petty scoundrels around, it's surpris- ing that anyone can afford to be kind or generous at all: TALL TREES One well known Haileyburian is commenting that the town is wasting its most precious asset-- the view of Lake Temiskaming. Many of the trees planted or- iginally to beautify the town, are now so tall that the view of the lake is cut off for many re- sidents. It might be a good idea to trim the trees down to a reasonable height that wouldn't detract from their beauty, and would at the same time permit a better view of the lake. Haileyburian Want Ads Will Bring Results THE ROTARY WHEEL by Norman Abraham Since our President is attend- ing the Rotary conference in Peterborough, vice-president Ian MacDiarmid took over our meet- ing. We had one guest, Rotarian G. Huot of the Noranda-Rouyn Club. Our guest speaker was Mr. Jack Shouldice of Haileybury who spoke on the activities and achievements of the midget and juvenile fastball teams here in Haileybury. Through work of Mr. Shouldice, David Tuer, and a number of interest- ed and helpful citizens, these teams, with the coaching they received, showed their skill in many action-filled games they played this summer, and proved that they provide the future ballplayers of Haileybury. As Mr. Shouldice stated that with the increased activity on the lone ball field in town, another field is needed which has already been acquired by Mr. Shouldice with permission to use the min- ing school grounds. But a back- stop will have to be erected which will cost money..So this is where you, the citizens of Haileybury come in, if you are interested enough in helping to provide another suitable play- ground for these ballplayers, who may even be your own children, by making a contribu- tion towards this effort, Mr. Shouldice will be glad to receive donations at anytime between now and the next ball season. Speaking of financial situa- tions, our club is short of funds, everyone knows of the this Rotary Club helping will be and as work which does in this district in crippled children, we unable to operate efficiently without these funds. Therefore we are going to provide some entertainment for you bingo fans in the Tri-Town district which we hope you will greatly siipport. Our bingo will be held on Tuesday, October 11 in the Canadian Legion Hall, Hailey- bury, at 8.30. So please hold that date open because you may win up to $100.00. I'll be with you again next week with more news and activities which help to revolve the Rotary Wheel. ' the hard THE FIRE TOWER By R. L. Snow District Forester Fires or no fires, the work of the Department must go on. Ex- cellent progress is being made on the construction of a new tower-man's cabin for Mt. Fer- guson off Lake Temagami, and the repair and renovations to the Marten River Garage are well underway. Conservation Officers have completed the construction of a new cabin at Boyce Lake for use on winter park patrols and the new access roads to the Hatchery and Twenty Minute Lake are now ready for final 'grading. The construction of an icehouse and dock at Twenty Minute Lake is complete and in readiness for planes to load fish for aerial plantings in remote and inacces- sible lakes. In addition we were called upon to take action on 2 fires. One on Lake Nipissing south of Verner burned a small area as a result of a Smoker's thought- lessness, and one near Nipissing Junction on the C.N.R. which spread over % acre of bush from a blazing railway tank car full of fuel oil. REFORESTRATION Just about a month ago, this Department began to solicit as- sistance from the public to coll- ect tree cones. This is to report the results. While spruce collections were, as seemed inevitable, much _be- low the quantities desired. The crop was very light and the dry, hot weather caused the cones to rfpen so rapidly that only about 15% of the target quanti- ty was obtained. In general, the white pine crop was light also. However, some of the stands south of Mattawa bore excellent crops. Although conditions for collecting were not too fayour- able, this area yielded over 300 bushels. Ranger John Morin. Mattawa, deserves full credit for his splendid efforts in scouting this area for cones and in organ- izing and handling the collec- tions. The co-operation of Geo. Gordon & Company Limited in picking nearly 100 bushels in Clary Township is also grate- fully acknowledged. The rest. of the District made many ' small contributions. In all, we were able to exceed the original targ- et by about 40%. What does this mean? Using white pine as an example, an ay- erage bushel of cones should yield approximately one pound-- or about 25.000--clean seeds. Thus we should have for our use over 10,000.000 seeds. If these are sown in nursery seedbeds, we may expect (after allowing for normal loss) in excess of 5,000.000 trees for permanent planting. If used in underplant- ing, over 10,000 acres could be treated. The response by the public has been very gratifying. We thank them for their help and trust that, in addition to the money they earned, they will derive satisfaction from the service rendered as depicted in the above figures. Check Children's Eyes "When your children return to school this fall, be sure that they are prepared to start * on new work and can come with the competition that exists in our Canadian schools,' G. M. tometrical Association of On- tario said today. "One of the greatest handi- caps our children have is faulty vision and faulty vision can be corrected,' he continued. "We can send our chidren to school with "Vision Unlimited." He submitted a list of toms that may serve parents and make them of the child's visual problems. They are as follows: Holding a book too close to the eyes, head- aches, squinting, fatigue, irrita- bility, nervousness, aversion to reading, crossed eyes, red wat- ering eyes, persistent inatten- tion to close work. "If your child was:in the last third of his class last year, be sure to have a professional vis- ion check-up before him in school this year," Belanger added, symp- to alert Mr. "A child who seems retarded in school, but who is otherwise bright may have a vision problem. the best, and we are pledged to stand firmly behind the parents and teachers of our communit- ies to see that our children's vision needs are cared for."
