Donald Gordan, chairman and president of the Canadian Nat- ional Railways, announced the awarding of the contract follow- ing a meeting of the CNR Board of Directors. The Piggott tender was the lowest of five tenders received As previously announced, the hotel is expected to be complet- ed expected in 1958. Steelwork 1s two-thirds complete, and the general contractor was expect- ed to start pouring the concrete floor slabs early in \the New Year. The Queen Elizabeth, part of a huge develdpment planned for the CNR's 20 acre terminal site in the heart of downtown Mont- real, will have approximately 12 00 guest rooms, and _ public rooms capable of seating 2500 persons at banquets and 4000 at meetings. It has been planned primarily as a convention center. There were only 65 grand pianos manufactured in Canada in 1954. The Bible Today Twenty-year drama of trans- Jating the whole Bible into Ukranian ended recently in Winnipeg. Canada has the Bible available in over 100 languages and dialects and today it is rare to find further translation work in progress here. Steeped in intrigue this dra- mas, last act begun in 1935 and the curtain fell only last year. It's early scenes were set up in Europe. Its hero, Dr: TIlarion Ohienko, professor of Kiev Uni- versity in the~ Ukraine, began making notes and collecting source material thirty years ear- lier while working in Warsaw University. The story reads like a Odyssey After years of effort his task was interrupted with the out- break of the Second World War. Then some of his precious notes and manuscripts were burned, There followed a flight through Poland to Czechoslovakia and on to a Monastery in Austria. Thus the remainder of the carefully preserved work was smuggled from place to place until it fina- lly reached Switzerland. There it was rescued by some British soldiers who sent it to Dr. Ohi- enko. By that time he had reach- ed Canada. ' Since 1950 until the translat- ion was completed, aided by two American Ukrainian -- scholars, Dr. Ohienko has laboured to put this new version of the Bible in- to the hands of his {people. The British and Foreign Bible Society has now begun its prod- uction and = distribution. This Society which has 16 Auxiliaries across Canada has been res- ponsible for 75 per cent of the work of translating and publish- ingthe Bible around the world.
