That prosperous, if not particul- arly fair city, is now all set to annex everything within sight or reach. all for the glory of a big- ger and better Sudbury. This brings to mind Lowery Tayor of New Liskeard, who at the development association meeting this week, suggested that the time will come when tke three towns will be one city, and we must all learn to work together. As the readers of the Hailey- burian well know, we have al- ways had the friendliest feeling towards New Liskeard, and feel that Haileybury should now prove its good will. Obviously Haileybury, as the center of the three towns, should be the administrative center of this new city, and we have everything to gain and nothing to lose by a city adminstration replacing our present small town set-up. So let's not waste any time: If Sudbury can do it, so can Hail- eybury. Let's annex New Lisk- eard, and everyhing else we can get our hands on. No doubt Mayor Bill Barr will he happy to give up his position in favor of our own extremely able mayor. By moving the town hall from Whitewood avenue to Haileybury, we can relieve the Liskeard taxpayers of a consid- erable burden. And they can al- ways pay their tax bills at the telephone office, We are 100 per cent in favor of forming one city. Haileybury will have a population of some 12 or 15 thousand, and no doubt the Liskeard folk in time will forget their misplaced loyalties, and in due course become loyal Haileyburians- But while this idea may take a little time to be fully accomp- lished, there is no reason why all three towns should not co- operate fully in the new indust- rial development assiciation, for their joint and individual benefit. We are used to hearing wails from the educators about how the wicked newpapers are low- ering educational standards. Now we feel a little better. We have just received a ten line news re- lease from one of our leading universities. In it, it states that Dean so-and-so will address the convocation, Address was spelled with one 'd'. SUMMER IS HERE The sun is shining. At least it was yesterday. Latest weather forecast includes thunder, show- ers, a fight between Mayor Art Cooke and the Ontario North- land, maybe artificial ice at the curling club, increaesd taxes, and probable demise of Mr. Molotov. but who cares, the summer is here. Latest reports from the Nor- thern Ski Club say that skiing is impossible. And according to the bathing beauty who took a dip yesterday off the dock, the water is fairly warm in Lake Temiskaming<«. tchcs ane oe After one of the dampest, coldest, and generally cussedest spring in years, summer is here and after the kind of spring we've had, we think it's worth a headline. The difference between these sums represents surpluses which have been ploughed back into the railway to give more efficient service to the industries and people it serves. Those who have known the railway since its inception, or indeed during the last twenty years, will readily changes have taken place in the physical bet- terment of the road and in the comfort and convenience of its costantly improving facilities. Such betterment is a definite policy which has been consist- ently pursued for fifty years. Major items in this program in recent years, completed or in progress, are; the change-over from steam or diesel power $12 Million; replacement of untreated ties with treated ties $3 Million; installation of a block signal system from North Bay to Tim- mins $114 Million; expansion and modernization of Commun- ications facilities, more Millions; use of heavier rails on mainline tracks and extension of passing tracks, furthur Millions. It is the con- stant aim of Ontario Northland -Transportation Commission and of the Management to improve the service rendered to all the people dependent upon it. That policy has in the past contributed to a major degree in the deve- lopment of industry, agriculture forestry activities and com- munal life. That policy will be maintained as paramount and it is the hope and expectation of all connected with the railway that it will in the future con- tinue to be a major factor in even more comprehensive deve- lopments.
