Page Two THE HAILEYBURIAN. AND COBALT WEEKLY POST C. Farr in 1904 Founded by C Member Canadian Weekly Newspaper Assoc. JOHN HUNT, LEIGH DAY Cobalt, Ont Haileybury, Ont. Publisher Manager Issued every Thursday from The Haileyburian Office; Broadway Street, Haileybary Authorized as Second-Class Mail, Post Office Department, Ottawa $2.50 per year, in In Canada advance In United States--$3.50 per year in advance EDITORIAL One of the few good effects of TV, seems to be that it is forcing the radio stations to im- prove their programs, It is per- haps ironical to think of Roy Thomson actually having to en- courage creative talent within his organizations, which for so long appear to have been domin- ated by executives with cash- register brains. For years we have had to put up with programs that consisted for 'the most part of canned music, canned news, and inter- minable commercials. More re- cently the radio stations have been making a real effort to improve the quality of their programs, and inevitable, the creative people on their staffs are now beginning to get some recognition. Jesse French, the amiable manager of the station, has made CJKL a lot of friends (it could surely use them) by his consistent policy of encouraging public service features and local talent. A few years ago we would occasionally hear Jesse's voice over Kirkland Lake, and once in a while CJKL-Kirkland Lake would broadcast a program that was fresh and different, and therefore completely out of the Thomson tradition, When CJKL opened its New Liskeard studio, fortunately they sent Jesse to run the show, instead of another cash-regis ter executive. Probably because he's far enbugh from head office to get away with it, he has served up a variety of programs completely out of the old .CJKL tradition of canned entertain- ment. He is extremely well liked locally for his work with child- ren, and to watch him draw out some shy and nervous young- ster is both an education and a lesson in human relations. We 'hear rumors that he now has a much more ambitious local tal- ent show up his sleeve, and no doubt it will equal or surpass his previous efforts. and the information When money is easy entertainment and economy booming, mediums of entertainment and information can prosper without much more talent than a wire service and some high pressure salesman. When things toughen up a little, even the Thomsons have to turn to talent to sell their product. If, in years gone by, CJKL had been run by Jesse French, or New Liskeard } Yes indeed! --Im having it done during the winter when men end materials are avatlable, EVERYBODY SHOULD SUPPORT THE WINTER WORK CAMPAIGN his type of creative radio man, then when the station tried to get a local TV license, it would have received a much more friendly welcome. As it is, it is significant that Mr. French per- sonally received a_ friendly and polite hearing from all local organizations, while some of the cash register boys going over, Good luck Jesse, keep up the good work, The only thing that puzzles us is how Thomson has been able to hang on fo you so long. You are far better than he deserves, ~ gota real Ole 'Orrible's Column It seems that natural gas is actually here, or at least, just around the corner. Several hund- red men will be needed to cut the right of way for the Trans- Canada line, and later this year the Northern Ontario Natural Gas Company will be busy in- stalling lines. One of the benefits we may expect from the Northern Ont- ario Natural Gas Company, is that it will have to havea strong and aggressive industrial development department, work- ing to bring new industries and business to the north, and new consumers for its product. © ekkaietok If ever there was a time for the Haileybury and Cobalt coun- cils to be on their respective toes, and promotion minded, it is now. There are some signs of life in the Haileybury council. At Cobalt, Councillor Mathews has shown already that he is prepared to risk unpopularity for the benefit of the town. It will be interesting to see if the cotton wool and status quo gang manage to stifle him with the old slogan "let's not do anything, and then we won't be criticised." seek The government has apparent- ly decided that the economy of New Liskeard is in such poor shape, that it has to steer some government departments there. A few months ago the depart- ment of public works was trying to find offices to place a division of the department of municipal affairs. It examined some excellent am & CONDITIONED for your COMFORT Located at King and York Sts., just two short blocks from Union Station in the heart of the business and shopping district. We might add that it didn't have the common politeness to let the Haileybury people know that it had made other arrangements. As the district town, with of- fice space available, Haileybury would have been the logical place to put the government of- fice. Judging by the progress being made by the department of works in. building the exten- sion to the mining school, Hail- eybury is on the governn? black list. ¢ SOrakee Tf courses in elementary logic are being taught in Ontario's schools, then W. J. Dunlop, min- ister of education, should enroll as a pupil. The last sentence of his letter to Mayor Cooke of Haileybury is about the most stupid statement we have seen from a minister of the Crown in a number of years, The thonorable minister won- ders if students will flock into Haileybury to study at a tech- nological institute if the town also has a mining institute. We presume that if Toronto Univer- sity only taught one subject in- stead of a dozen or more, that, using the minister's thinking, the.enrolment would be greatly enlarged. What the minister means is that while it might be perfectly logical to place the technologeal institute at Hail- eybury, where it. would supple- ment the mining institute, it may not be politically expedient to do so. RRAAKRARK The above picture, taken from our family album, is of old Chief one of ole 'orri- ble's ancestors. In his memory we are starting a fighting fund for the Indians of Lumbee Cou- nty in the U.S., who are doing to the Klu Klux Klan what Sitting Bull did to Custer. Don- ations of tomahawks, firearms and other equipment may be left at the office, and will be for- warded to Lumbee County, where some of this continents finest citizens are knocking the blazes out of an organization that should have been wiped out years ago. Personal Name C.alling is one of the most unlovely forms of political activity. Chances are that those who indulge in this practice do nothing to enchance in the public mind their own re- putation o rthat of the iparty to which they belong. Case in point is the bumbling personal critic- isms of the attributes of present members of the Federal Govern- ment made in recent series of addresses in Western Ontario by ___~_THE HAJLEYBURIAN and COBALT WEEKLY POST Sg ee Oa ap eGN 23rd,"1958 former Immigration Minister Pickersgill. According to Mr. Pickersgill, Prime Minister Die- fenbaker is "incompetent, Trade Minister Churchill "a high school debater," and Finance Minister Fleming 'the most pugnaciius, arrogant, offensive, rudest person in Parliament in 20 years." Commenting on Mr. Picker- gill's utterance, The Brantford Expositor observes: "This may be 'said to him, that it, as: some sicial arbiters claim, a_ gentle- man is one who is never unin- tentionally rude, then he is a gentleman.' Mr. Pickersgill would serve Parliament and his constituents better if he dis- carded his arsenal of offensive adjectives and devoted himself ti his proper role as an Opposi- tion member, namely, criticizing the Government in the House of Commons and _ supporting his criticisms by facts. Adequate ammunition should not be hard to find. CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY (Continued from Page 1) the children in boarding homes and schools, The Society car used by the staff in the branch office in Haileybury was traded in on a new car purchased in the Tri- Town area. The executive com- mittee presented recommendat- ion pertaining to improvements required at the Receiving Home. Tentative plans were made for the Annual Meeting of the Sac- iety to be held in Haileybury in March or the early part of April. After a vote of thanks to Mrs. Field for her hospitality the meeting was adjourned. OTTAWA REPORT By Arnold Peters, M.P. In the past few months as your representative I have learned a great many things about the everyday operation of our federal government. I have much more to learn but I an en- tirely convinced that I can with your help be a good representa- tive of the peaple of Temiskam- ing and at the same time con- tribute some new and construct- ive measures to the House of Commons. e What I have said on several ocasions has not met with com- plete approval by everyone. This is particularly true in regard to my position to the Emergency Gold Mines Assistance Act. I said while discussing the estimates of the Department of Mines that I was in favor of in- creasing the subsidy paid to the gold mines under the E.G:M.A., Act but that certain conditions must be secured, First the mines receiving this subsidy must see that the wages of its employees would allow the employees a de- cent standard of living which would provide for reasonable support of the communities de- pendent on the mines. And sec- ondly, some of the increased as- sistance should be used to set up scondary industries against the day when the mines would be worked out, so that our mining communities -would not be left in disastrous straits, The Northern Miner, which speaks for the mining compan- ies and has been no supporter of the workers in the mines, de- clared in its-editorial of Decem- ber 26th, 1957, that my position would only lead to wage demands. As an ex-miner I. know that the wages in the gold mining industry are well below those wages paid in other mining communities and an in- crease may be requested. How- ever, my main objective in ask- ing for increased assistance is to obtain secondary industries that will employ the men in the mining fields that cannot werk in the mines: and. also the women who. can find only limited em- ployment in mining areas. For years the Conservatives have spoken for a better deal for the Gold: Mining industry. I per- sonally had expected an increase in the assistance that the Lib- erals had curtailed. However on Phone . t Pick-Up and 460 .Delivery WE SELL THE BEST SERVICE THE REST 'TRI-TOWN T.V. & RADIO 19 Armstrong St. 460. New January 7th the Minister of Mines gave notice that the pre- sent E.G.M.A. Act. would be ex- tended for two years at the next session. He made no mention of any increase whatever. In this regard the policy is the same as that pursued by the former Lib- eral regime. To me the an- nouncement was a_ disalppoint- ment, I am sure it is a disap- pointment to all the miners and the communities dependent on the gold mining industry.
