THE HAILEYBURIAN and COBALT WEEKLY POST THURS.,. MARCH 20th, 1958 will be held on Wednesday, Mav with selections on the piano and community singing was also en- joyed. During the past few months John Diefenbaker has shown his determination to bring this dream about. His government is composed of men of French, English, Ukrainian and other extractions. His party organiz- ation includes a Chinese Can- adian, while the Canadian Senate It is perhaps about will now be graced by a Red Indian. The Conservatives have not prated about national unity and at the same time encouraged national disunity by harping on differences between French and English speaking Canadians, Mr. Diefenbaker has shown that as far as his government is con- cerned, French, English, Indian, Chinese and every other kind of Canadian will get an even break. His policy of national develop- ment, particularty in the far north and Northwestern territ- ories will in the near future make Canada a power in the world that will offset greatly the continued expansion of the Com- munist forces The contrast between Mr, Die- fenbaker's plans for northern development, and Mr. Pearson's sneer at roads from igloo to igloo, is so great that it leaves little doubt as to how Can- adians should vote come March 31, TRY CONDENSED ADS FOR PROMPT RESULTS CRIPPLED CHILDREN e Use Easter Seals FOR YOUR EXPLOSIVE REQUIREMENTS SEE T. J. DUNCAN C.I.L. DEALER 66 Baker Street Cobalt, Ont. The Cobalt streets in general and the sidewalks in particular have been in an awiul condition ot late. To get down the Pros- pect avenue steps required the agility of a mountain goat, or a pair ot skis during much oi the winter. The sidewalk at the rockcut has been almost beyond des- cription, Why someone hasnt fallen on to highwav 11 and killed themselves, we dont know. The old rockcut puddle is back in full flood, The town gang has been tied up day aiter day thawing ou frozen water lines, using a bor- rowed machine. All in all, it has been a real snaiu, Perhaps the best thing to do would be to put 90 per cent of the town work out for contract, or put garbage collection out for contract. The horrible mess of spilled garbage ouside the Adam's block continues. Last time a_ certain horrible councillor complained to the health unit, someone tipped off the tenants, and all the gar- bage cans were tied down and some even painted, In fact, it's the stray dogs more than the tenants who are to blame. And similar conditions exist all over town. aE At a recent funeral of a vete ran in Haileybury, members o the Haileybury Legion great! appreciated the assistance ren dered them by members of th Cobalt Legion. The combined forces made a grand turnout. and officers of the Haileybury group have asked us to say 'thank you' publicly to their comrades in Cobalt, Pt Surely something could be done to improve the southern entrance to Haileybury, At night time a few lights shine dimly through the trees. Rorke avenue is extremely dark for pedest- rians and motorists alike, and on a wet night it is a very danger- ous place indeed. More lights are needed for two reasons. The first is public safe- ty, and the second to persuarde tourists that they are entering a town worth staying in, and not the entrance to a morgue. So there is going' to bea joint meeting of the candidates in. New Liskeard. Foster has is- sued the invitation, -Arnold has accepted, and we don't know what Ted Miron will do. It should be fun anyway. Don't know why candidates are so very polite these days. If we were running a 'political camp- aign we would have squads of hecklers asking awkward quest- ions at every meeting. We are all for the old fashioned kind of politics, when candidates weren't afraid of calling a spade a so and so shovel. Of course, as a Sir John A. MacDonald Conservat- ive, we are out of tune with nearly 'everyone and against nearly everything. FIRE Judging by the number of Liberals and some CCFers who ire holding down polling booth jobs, either the days of policical patronage are at an end, or someone has goofed.
