FOR SAFETY'S SAKE Be rude when you're in the driver's seat of a car! That's a strange thing for me to say. But I mean it. When you're at the wheel of an auto- mobile you may have to forego some of the rules of etiquette. There are times when the safety of you and your passengers may depend on your being rude to them. Some of the courtesies a man usually extends to a woman must be abandoned when he is driving. One hard and fast rule of courtesy: "Do not seat yourself while ladies are standing", cer- tainly shouldn't apply when en- tering a car that is parked on a busy street. The cavalier who assists his lady into the front seat, then dashes around to the driver's side, is more foolh than gallant. He endangers bo himself and the passing cars that swerve to avoid hitting him. A woman's concern for her companion's safety should lead her to insist that he precede her into the car. With a murmured apology, he gets in and assists her as best he can. Alighting from an automobile at a place where there is no doorman presents a similar prob- lem. On a quiet street or in a driveway, the man gets out first , and helps his passenger. Need- | less to say, for him to step out | of the car into a busy traffic lane would invite disaster. For safety must limit his assistance to opening his companion's door from- inside the car. The custom of lighting a we- man's cigarette is another cour- tesy a man must ignore when he's in the driver's seat. If he sees that his companion is about to smoke, he may indicate the dashboard lighter and start it , for her. The woman herself must attend to her light. No driver should divert his attention from the road long enough to perform this service. In fact, if he knows she smokes, a man may even ask a woman to light a cigarette for him while he is driving! No chit-chat Even the everyday customs of conversation sometimes must be sacrificed in the interests of safety. To try.to develop your guests conversationally is an' ad- mirable thing to.do in your living reoom. Yet when you need to pay strict attention to your driving, I recommend -you abandon any attempt at social chit-chat. Con- siderate passengers will observe your silence and postpone con- versation until you are safely through a traffic tangle. And you shouldn't hesitate to say, "Please I can't answer now," to those talkers who distract you. Then after you are past the next corner explain that getting the car through that situation required all your attention. And if the traffic seems to warrant it | add, "I had better /watch these cars and not try to talk." Interrupting a speaker is an- other-social misdemeanor that may be a life-saver in the car. All questions the driver has about traffic or street conditions have immediate priority: "Is there a car, coming up behind me?" or "Do you see the.route marker?" ° "Please watch for the Mason Street turn." Don't hesitate® to break into any conversation when you. need your passengers' help in traffic problems. Children in the car sometimes create a dilemma for the driver. Never reprove a small child in pie ber Partats oy let them ey deem it- necessary. This is a good enough axiom of etiquette. Yet, when your friends permit their children to stand up in the car or do other things that are taboo in your safe-riding rules, what should you do? You, as the driver, are responsible for the safety of everyone in the car. You also don't want to have your hard-won. discipline over your own children undermined. Once again, safety wins over strict etiquette. Tell the parents and the children how you expect your passengers to behave -- and indicate to the parents their re- sponsibility, for control.
