But were are annoyed on one score, and that is the insult to the civic pride of thatparty. First to disavow Haileybury and Cobalt rendered by the gas promoters. . It seems that nearly every politician, mayor and councillor in Northern Ontario was given the chance the of buying some stock mighty cheap, but as far as we can find out, neither Cooke of Haileybury nor Damiani of Cobalt got a red cent out of the company. _~ . Mr. Cooke may not be above suspicion. A year or two ago he traded in his 1931 coupe for something slightly more modern, and recently he bought a small boat. As for Mr. Damiani, he was seen fixing his house recently, but as far as we can ascertain, both these gentlemen owe their modest prosperity w mure or 1esshonest toil. Now why, we ask, were our mayors passed over when - the gravy was being handed out. Aren't we entitled to a little graft too. Are Haileybury and Cobalt so insignifi - _. Gant that nobody gave a damn about bribing us. Or is it, and what a horrible thought, that our mayors are so honest that the promoters didn't dare offer them any - thing. Or, and this is even worse, the local boys just. weren't smart enough to hold out for some stockin ex- change for favors rendered. If thatis the case, we should throw them both out. Worker killed oa job Novak Miskov, aged 30, »f New Liskeard, anemplo- yee of the Pipe line construction project, was killedinstantly last week when the walls of a clay tren- ch collapsed, crushing him against 2 length of heavy : pipe. This was the second fatal accident on the project in the past three weeks. 'Mr. Miskov was one ofa Williams Bros, work party laying pipe in the trench, and was removing a snag- pin from a rigging sling around alengthofpipe when the wet clay walls of the ditch gave way and collaps- ed. The crew foreman, and another fellow workman yelled at Miskov as the walls started to collapse, but apparently he could not un- derstand English, and didn't heed the warning. Mr. Mis- kov, a Hungarian immigrant only came to Canada some - seven months ago. Mrs. Miskov, wife of the deceased, was taken to New Liskeard General Hospital, and is believed to be suffer- ing from severe shock, Dr. J.F.
