4 Haileybury, Ontario Page 12 The Haileyburian oa Thursday, October 2, 1958 Across the Gian Table By MRS. MAC At a recent Women's Institute meeting in New Liskeard, Mrs. W. C. Barrett showed movies taken on a recent trip through England and a@ number of other countries in Europe. One of the interesting things she told us was that in one city in Holland, their flag is flown at half mast in the public square every time there is a traffic ac- cident inside the city limits. If that plan followed in this fountry, I am afraid that the flag would be at half mast very often: zk By the time this appears in print {the area convention for the» com- bined district Women's. Institutes of North and South:Cochrane and South Temiskaming will have be- fome history. Reservations have come in from members as far Hway as Island Falls, which, in- eidently, is the farthest north of any Institute branch in Ontario. _ The North Cobalt Branch is the hostess branch this year, the con- vention will be held in the Parish Hall there and we will tell you al about it in one Bs) issue. _ I wonder vier many housewives feel provoked when they purchase a box of detergent or rolled oats or cereal and find a good part of the Space in the box taken up by a so- galled premium for which they have no use? ,,1 firmly believe that the pack- aged prouducts of this type that do WOT either contain an article of small value, or have a coupon on the outside to be sent in, plus "a few cents", could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Most people prefer that their kitchen dishes match or at least contrast agreeably, and dislike a hodge- podge of design and quality, and as for the toys, masks and other junk that can be obtained by send- ing. in coupons or box-tops, plus, of course, a certain amount of cash fffor mailing charges', they are, fo my mind, nothing but a moth- er's nightmare. I think it is about«time that we all waken- up and send letters of protest to the companies involved and also to the Canadian Associa- tion .of- Consumers, rather than grumble to ourselves and our neighbors, and put up with it. ,.It is said that the weather is al- ways a safe topic of conversation, Jout this last week or so, it has not only been a safe topic, but a delightful one as well. During the week-end. I fair revelled in my garden, getting old blooms pulled, admiring the dozens of roses that are having their last fling before frost arrives and in between times, Zazing in admiration at the vista 'colors on the hills across the lake. I also planted four, different va- rieties of peonies and four of phlox, all of them given to me by Canon Sims, in exchange for a few iris roots. This fall, too, I got some new iris roots, including several pink and red shades so I am rather anxious to see how they turn out. _ Something new in the way of 'student nurses uniforms are being 3 Wanted ICE MAKER for Cobalt-Haileybury ~ -- Curling Club All applications to be in by OCTOBER 18, 1958 Duties fo commence on November 1, 1958 ; State experience and salary expected Apply. in writing only to the club president -- Ronald A.
