It is the day the new system of demerit marks comes into effect that-will probably mean within 1a short period of time that many motorists will have 'their driving licenses suspended for various periods, To'some it may not take long to accumulate the 12 points which will mean the fifting of their' license--others will not get very many if any. If 'it has the effect of cutting down on the number 'of accidents it will be well worth the added cost. If it means the saving of lives, it will be worth it no matter what the cost. With Ontario ~highways as crowded as they are today, and the ever increasing number 'of ac- cidents, something' had to be done and it is quite possible that On- tario has come' up with something that will work. Of course two years is only a reasonable period in which~to gather the twelve demerit marks--we know some that could accumulate them in a much shorter period without half trying. On the other hand, if the system works the way-it is expect- ed to work, it should-mean a re- diction in automobile insurance rates--we hope. We suppose that there will be those that will take @}chance on' driving without a ligense (after suspension) just as there are today. Some means will probably have to be found to more strictly enforce this phase of oper- ations, which has been a problem for some years. One small group of New> Lis- keard fishermen had more than fishermen's luck last week in spite of the cold weather. They were successful in landing a total of (well the limit anyway) of Lake trout. Sure the going was tough, more than three hours on snow shoes for 'the hike in--an uncomfortable night when they didn't cut enough wood to keep themselves warm until morning and the thermometer dropping to better than 20 below, but still they didn't seem 'to mind it when the fish started biting pretty good, and then the long hike back to the highway packing their catch, still they figure it was worth it-- and we guess it was. The only persons wearing a smile these days seem to be the boys who are peddling fuel. While we haven't heard many reports of them working too much over- time to keep the residents sup- plied they have sure had to hustle to keep up with the demand. The latter applies only to the oil and coal dealers, or course, but Sam Kearns is wearing a smile just the same as 'the gas meters klick a little faster as the bottom 'falls out of the thermometers and the "We Serve P. Lumbering 'took its place to some extent and now in the summer and fall the tourist industry helps to keep the community going. In spite of the smallness of its size, the residents do not intend to let their 50th birthday pass by un- noticed.
