Page 6 The Haileyburian Thursday, January 29, 1959 Across the Kitchen Table By MRS. MAC During the past few years con- siderable interest has been shown in handmade candles, particularly at Christmas time when some wonderful confections of colored wax, glitter and what have you, make their appearance. They are a far cry from the tal- low candles my grandmother used to make, sixty or more years ago. Although she has told me of mak- ing them by dipping the wick into the melted tallow, letting it hard- en and re-dipping until the candle was of the proper size, I remem- ber seeing her candle molds that made a dozen at a time. They were the shape of the candles, News from the Svelyn Shoppe Once again Evelyn has gone over the coats, car coats, dresses and all other items of winter stock on the shelves, making further drastic reductions for quick clear- ance. Right NOW is the time for the thrifty shopper to take advant- age of these low prices. Among the bargains in coats are these -- a smart blue and. black tweed with a small fur collar, size 12, reg. $69.95 for $35.00 -- one only black coat size 1812, marked down from $49.95 to $24.95 -- a black coat with a brown mink col- lar, size 14, by Gordon, regular $85.00 now only $49.95 -- a Poslun car coat in red with a white Borg hood, size 10, reduced from $25.00 to. $14.50, and several others that are excellen value, too. Nylon overshoes, with pile lining and. fur trim, marked down from $11.95 to $5.95. If you don't need them now, remember there's an- other winter coming. Whether you're Scottish or not, you'll love the Tartan. wool house- coat by MacIntosh, size 18, form- erly $19.95 now going. at $8.95, also one in red tartan; size 16, at. $7.95. These are both full length, wonder- ful for chilly morning. Drop in and see for yourself the many wonderful values, and choose a dress from a number that have been regrouped for final clearance. THE SHOPPE about ten inches long, and opened in the centre so that when they had been tightly closed, and filled with the tallow, they could be opened to extract the hardened candle. I have just been reading an ar- ticle about the largest candle fac- tory in Britain, which was re- sponsible for my thoughts flying back to my childhood days. In this factory, while they have some of the most modern machinery in the world, they still employ the old hand dipped or poured method, especially for altar candles which are made of beeswax instead of the paraffin wax that is used for most* candles. One altar candle, made recently was six feet long, weighed about thirty-five pounds and cost over forty dollars. To make the little birthday can- dles which our children so gleefully blow out, powdered wax is com- pressed, then squeezed out like a long cord and fed into a machine which cuts_it.to the proper size. Belated wishes for a happy birth- day go to Mr. Syd Graham, who' became seventy-two years young on January 20. I miss Mr. Graham since he is no longer the press re- porter for the Rotary Club. I al- ways got the reports from him reg- ularly, every week and right on time and I wish he would take on the job again! I read a little news item last week about a man in England who had been deaf for eight years, and while listening to his radio, he heard something go "click" as one of the more rabid rock and roll secreechers was blaring and he found that his hearing had return- ed. There's nothing remarkable in that. It happens in many homes when rock and roll becomes un- bearable. What goes "click" is the off switch of the radio and immed- iately, normal hearing returns. * * * * Wouldn't it be nice in this age of hurry and scurry, if we had, or took a little more time for the peaceful things? There just does- n't seem to be any time, after the business of making a living and fulfilling our obligations, or what we think are our obligations, to the various organizations we be- long to, to settle down and either do nothing for a few minutes, or else do some of the relaxing things we used to be able to do-as a matter of course. I have a neighbor who has had a bout with the dentist followed by a bit of infection which pre- vented her going out for a week. Do you know what she did?
