It is supposed to mark the time that the little animal comes out to see if spring is just around the corner or whether we are still due for more winter, If he fails to see his shadow--spring is almost here. We don't suppose the little fellow could burrow his way through the snow, without freezing his feet, and then we doubt if he would see the shadow. Anyway, we think that W. F. Lickley and Mrs. Lick- ley had a better idea than the groundhog--they 'have gone look- ing for spring. Leaving behind the cribbage board and bridge table at New Liskeard Curling Rink. and presumably humming '"Cali- fornia Here I-. Come,' they set off the early part of the week for Vancouver by plane, and then by car for a couple of months--or enough time anyway to give the snow time to start disappearing. We must be doing better with both the Speakerand The Hailey- buriai,The other morning over a cup of coffee, Bill Fleming and Jack: McDonald of MHaitleybury, tthought it was about time that we took another ribbing about short comings of either paper and im- mediately started the gears whirl- ing in their domes, to see what they could come up with. They thought and thought, and thought, and finally the gears ground to a halt and the coffee got cold and they came to the conclusion that there was nothing that they could complain about. All of -which makes it look -- if we can keep up the pace that 1959 will be a little more cheefful year--if not a better one, Jack McDonald counts that day lost if he cant find anything to rib us about for one reason or another, A new curling trophy will shori- ly make its appearance in Tem- iskaming. Following Saturday afternoon's game at Elk Lake, when a rink of New Liskeard curlers journeyed to the little 58- year-old community for a friendly game, Jim Waterhouse and Len Mallinson decided to put up a trophy for competition between the two clubs. To be known as the Waterhouse-Mallinson Trophy it is for more than once each season. While Elk Lake curlers have been able to show New Liskeard curl- ers some of the finer points of the game on New Liskeard ice, over the years, the trophy is being put up, probably in appreciation for some of the technique the boys from New Liskeard demonstrated on Saturday.
