The Rambling Reporter lf emiskaming mourns. the death of| Alex MacLean this week. The veteran photographer of the north died suddenly on Friday night at a imeeting of the chess club. His photographic work was known far ard wide, the demand for his pic- tures, which were a work of art, was exceptional. But what is more important, was always his willing- ness to give a helping hand to budding photographers who came to'him with their problents. Hail- eybury will-miss him, and the vac- uum -his passing leaves will be hard to fill in the Tri-town area. } This week-end the big T. and N.O. Bonspiel gets under way-at Woranda. Instead of the week- long event in vogue for years the Spiel has been.cut down to about a three day affair, This year they have an entry of about 73 or 74 rinks and with being guaranteed Six games it looks as though the boys will be just about curling the clock around in spite of the 12) sheets of exceptionally keen icd. Three rinks are going from New Liskeard and four rinks from Hailey-bury-Cobalt Club will rep- resent the Tri-Town Area. The "spiel opens at Noranda on Wed- neSday night with a reception and a draw mostly for local or close- in irinks. And we think we have trouble with snow. Sure the banks are getting a little higher, but no re- cords have been set--so none will be} broken. The other day we had to make a trip to Gravenhurst and that Muskoka town, along with Huntsville and Bracebridge, seem to have their share and then some. Snowbanks on the streets of the towns, side as well as the main drags, barely allow for two ve- hidles to pass. In fact at Graven- hutst we asked if they didn't be- lieve in snow removal. They said they did and had tried it, but they couldn't keep up with the white fluffy stuff. A motorist could sure pick up points for get- ting out of his car on the driver's side. If he parks anywhere near where the curb should be fhe will find snow as high as the roof and HORT TESTU VALENTINE'S _WHITBY'S * PHARMACY t Hay i the car door won't open. If he gets out on the driver's side, he has to watch--or he won't have a door. But then none of the communities have anything on the community of Owen Sound, where a snow fall was just over nine feet. We imagine the residents who have used the motto, '"'No snow shovel- ling after 40" have had to throw it out the window or stay in the house all winter. The Belleville McFarlands now touring Europe in search of hock- ey honors will, in all probability, have a couple of supporters from Northern Ontario when they play in The Prague, behind the Iron Curtain. If all goes well, Cec Con- nelly, now of Ottawa and brother Clarence of Haileybury, both of whom peddle General Motors pro- ducts for a living are flying to Europe for a holiday with the ex- press purpose of taking in some of the hockey matches the Cana- dian team are-playing. Brother Ar- nold was also invited to take the trip with them but said=he didn't feel up to the effort since his ac- cident last fall. "Tf at first you don't succeed, try, try again," seems to be the motto of Les Redford and his Mc- Intyre curlers. Once again the ace of curlers .of the Timmins area has emerged successful from the Consols curling competition in the T. &.N: O. Association and for the fourth time in five years Les and his three fellow curlers will try their luck at winning the Northérn Ontario curling? honors and represent the area in the Mc- Donald Brier for the Dominion Curling honors. The boys in this section of the Province will be pulling for 'Les when the play- offs start next week-end. If Butch Spooner of Temagami is blushing these days it won't be from the shadow of his beard, or any ribbing he is taking about his VanDyke. Butch is almost in the same category as the boating en- thusiast who built his boat in the basement and then found that he couldn't get it -out. Butch has built himself a super deluxe fishing hut just to catch the big ones at Lake Temagami during the winter. He has it nicely insulated, so that f}if they are biting good he could stay even for the night. If they bite late, he has added a bunk to it so that he can stay and start in again in the morning. There is only one thing wrong with it. He it stays. At the present time there is so. much snow, the hut is so || heavy that-he can't find anyway to move it to the better fishing he was figuring on adding a check- er or a cribbage board and-using it as is, where is,--but not for fishing. | Classified Ads Bring Results ANDY SCOTT and.
