inne Opereffa - Draws Big Crowd The students of grades seven and eight of the Haileybury pub- lic school presented an excellent comic operetta, "The Smugglers," in the auditorium of the school, March 5, as an Education Week project. 'The play, in three acts, was prc- duced and, directed by Mrs: Stan] Weir and Mrs. William Hammer- strom, two of the teachers. The two star roles, Monty the head of the Smugglers, and Miss Priscilla Prim, an old maid at the ~ head of a young ladies college, were taken by Wayne Mattice and Beverley Childs. : Others with speaking parts in- cluded smugglers, Tom taken by Michael Hammerstrom; Charley- _ John Neilson; Norman-Walter Ad- ams; Bob-David MacVeigh; Dick- Russell Findlay. The young. la- dies from the college were Mabel, ' Dianna Dean; Della-Vicki Gilkes; Kathleen-Joanne MacDonnell; Sue- Linda Quinlan. The very effective police pa- trol consisted of "Sergeant" Earl Houghtling; "Constable"?. Wayne Russell; and 'Constable'? Carl Neilson. Without speaking parts but do- ing a.splendid job as supporting east were Bobby Gilroy, David Larabie, Rory MacDiarmid, Rod- ney MacDonnell and Walter Os- lund as smugglers; Rosemary Robinson, Pat Lowery, Alice Le- mire, Mary Hurst, Margaret Men- zies, Leona Bigras. Willa Mae Black, Jane Cavanaugh, Lynn Har- grave, Peggy Larabie, Doris Le- mire, Joyce Lindsay and Judy Mc- Quaid as young ladies from the college. The attendance at the play was 'excellent and the applause of the audience testified to the ability of the members of the cast. Haileybury 10DE Plans Fashion Show The regular monthly meeting of the Haileybury Chapter IODE was held March 9 at the home of Mrs. J. Shouldice. The budget for the coming year was approved. Prizes for the highest standing in Social Studies will again be awarded at the Public, Separate, High and Fatima Schools. Infor- -mation regarding Bursaries has been forwarded to the principals of both High Schools. Mrs. G. L. Cassidy, Regent, has asked members for their full sup- port in the current drive for funds through their talents. Anyone wish- ing a homemade cake, pie, bread or buns are asked to. contact Mrs. C, E. Blackwell, OS 2-3169, from nine to eleven a.m. and place their order. One days notice is requested. Tentative plans were made for a Fashion Show to be held in Sep- tember. Tickets will soon be avail- able on a water color, painted and donated by Brig. G. L. Cassidy, with the draw being made at the annual June Tea. Four new members, Mrs. C. Blackwell, Mrs. J. Donner, Mrs. W. Gibson and Mrs. J. Brumell, were welcomed into the Chapter. Mixed Bonspiel Has Record Entry The Mixed Bonspiel which is being held this week-end under the local Curling Club gets under way Friday evening, March 13th. There are 72 rinks entered and in order to hasten the spiel along, there will be three draws Friday evening at six, o'clock at both the New Liskeard and the local rink. The finals in the Bagshaw com- petition will be played this week between rinks skipped by Tom Cragg and Mel Robb. The ladies of the local curling club are holding a visitor's day on March 22nd with invitations be- eight and ten} ing sent to the various clubs in the district. The Norman Herron Competi- tion which is the most coveted event in the Ladies' Curling Club finished play on Tuesday evening in the regular games. There were three rinks having more wins than the others so they will play off for first, second and third prizes. In the Men's section of the curl- ing club the various competitions are almost completed. Remi Morissette's rink won the BP Canada Event. By Fred Larecque Well, Comrades, t notice by the old calendar on the wall that the days are slipping swiftly by and lots of us still haven't got around to paying our membership dues for good old branch 54. The time is now. It's not that we can't af- ford it, mostly it has been an over- sight on our parts. After all $6.25 per year comes to a huge sum of fifty-two cents per month. It cer- tainly won't put us in the poor house. I am trying to use the news- paper as a means to get all you guys interested. There will be prizes for the winning team .but once again I would like to remind each and every one that you must be a member in good standing to compete in the tournament. That's about it for this week, men. I have to rush down to the Hall to pay my own dues, who knows; maybe a game of darts and a brew or_two as well.
