oe PEN PICTURES ~ Penetrates Iron Curtain "RUSS FLEMING In a streamlined today, success | is a commodity that is steadily be- coming more difficult to attain. The pioneer spirit of the last de- cade is draining; sacrificed for a feather bedding of security rather than a race to the pinnacle. In those times a man with uninhibit- ed will power and yet little cash could rise through the ranks to attain a station worth reckoning. "The Self Made Man". Despite the change in the times and-the new way of life one man feels that that tranquillizing effect of social- ism does not produce the effective- ness. or stimulation of past days. Clarence Connelly was born in Cobalt in 1915, in the midst of one of the largest mining booms the north country has even known, and in spite of the fact that he never became directly connected with 'mining, the fervor and ambition of the silver-strike days left their marks, an impression that since then he has notably sustained. The first venture forth into the business world, was in the dairy business where he became an ap- prentice to the trade, and practic- ed it for five years. After the initial challenge was met in the dairy, he left it in favor of greener fields, and be- came a travelling salesman for Raleigh novelty and medicines. Armed to the teeth with his pro- ducts he covered towns and coun- tryside in the winter by horse and wagon and in the summer by au- ~tomobile. But whether the farmers dogs or the travelling salesmen jokes became too much, in 1937, he re- tired from the selling line to be- come the youngest police officer that Cobalt ever employed. Shortly after his adventure in law and order, Clarence joined his brother Cecil to open a gas busi- ness and in 1946 the two brothers went into the automobile business in New Liskeard, under the name of Temiskaming Motors, located on the south bank af the Wabi, right at the bridge. The business progressed so well that it was not - long before an expansion was "necessary. In' 1950 Clarence sold out his share in Temiskaming otors and invested in his own concern. He bought the Haileybury Garage on Ferguson Ave, in Hail- eybury and has been serving the community successfully since. A hunting and fishing enthusiast, _Clarence never misses an oppor- tunity to get out and try his luck when the season is on, and by all reports, very successfully. He has an interest in the Paddle Lake Hunt Camp, which he uses as a base for most of his expeditions. , Always interested in the wel- - fare of the town's youngsters, in __ 1954 and 1955, he sponsored the Haileybury 'Hockey Club. Rockets, Juvenile Recently he has taken to travel for hobby and relaxation, just re- turning from a trip abroad. Taking off from New York on March 1, he landed in Zurich, Switzerland, after making refuel- ing stops at Gander Airdrome and Ireland. During the three day stop over in Zurich he had the unique privilege of viewing the prelimin- aries-of the world hockey tourna- ment, Switzerland playing host to the Canadian. team. The "city by city tour'? dropped down to. Milano, Italy, -and had an opportunity of seeing history preserved at first hand. The mem- bers of the tour put in a full work- ing day from nine in the morning till six at night. Rome the European seat of re- ligion and civilization and Vienna, "Vien" to the Austrians, were on the- touring route and in their turn played host. Beyond any doubt everyone on the tour were in unison that the climax of the entire tour came when .they went behind the Iron Curtain to Prague in Czeckoslo- vakia. Not only did this afford them the opportunity to view prac- tical communism at work, but World Hockey Finals were also scheduled to finish there. They joined the Canadian Hock- q 4 COUPON My guess is that the ice will be out of Lake Temiskaming ey team in Prague and saw the re- mainder of the games. Clarence stated that we have an excellent hockey club despite los- ing the final game to the Czecs. "Tf enough support is given to the team it will mature into one of the finest that we have ever pro- duced." He said the European teams must not be under-rated, they are entirely serious about the game. But most' of their strength lies in their skating abil- ity. proved to be unusual, with a forced stop over at Iceland, affording everyone a chance to see life in one of the farthest northern coun- tries. a Arriving back Clarence readily acclaimed that the Northland was the only place to live. He said, "'af- ter reading dejection on the faces of the people in the Communist countries -and experiencing the backward conditions of the rest of the world, I can count myself for- tunate that I live in Canada."
