Community Centre The editorial column of this paper is usually blank, not because of any lack of material, but because we have. not the complete rapport with Haileybury that would make our opinions worth reading. But council discussed a matter at its last meeting, on which- we do have opinions, and we are offering them for ~what they are worth. Norm Abrahams approached council on Monday with a proposal for the building of a community centre in Haileybury, and received proper and courteous attention from your elected Body. "The plan for a Community Centre is a good one, and across Canada, progressive towns have acknowledged that tax money may properly be spent for such a project. There have been pitfalls for unwary planners in the past, and some towns have been saddled with a white ele- phant that does little and costs much, but much more is known now about these matters, and it has become com- paratively simple to build a plant that is a distinct asset to a community. When Mr. Abrahams told 'council the plant would 'cost about $180,000, it was almost possible to hear the wheels buzzing in the collective heads of council. The capital sum, amortized in 20 years means $9,000 a year, plus interest, a big sum, for a small town, But what it actually means is that every householder in the town could have a membership: im the community pro- ject for $20 a year, and this amount would leave something over for operating expenses, after the mortgage payment had been made. The dividends from such a project could be well worth while in such a closely knit community, and the project should not be scrapped too quickly because of the cost. No.one could deny that they picked a good day for it as long as the sun was out from under the clouds, but then when it disappeared for a few minutes, one had doubts if spring was really close. In addition to the safety check the same as former years, the boys are also handing out Safe Driving Booklets, pre- pared for the Department, with just about all the necessary in- formation required -- including the number of points a driver can ac- cumulate for the various infrac- tions. Herbst, an expert chess player from Toronto, will be the guest of the Haileybury Chess Club on April 18 and 19, and meet- ings, including a simultaneous ex- hibition, will be held at the Hail- eybury Hotel. As part of the programme the weekly meeting of the H.C.C., us- ually held on Friday evening, has been scheduled for Saturday in- stead and will commence with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The nature of this meeting, with Mr. Herbst in attendance, will be of particular value fo all those interested in chess, and visitors will be warmly welcomed. On Sunday afternoon, April 19, Mr. Herbst will give a demon- stration of his skill in simultaneous chess against local players and visitors from Sudbury, North Bay and Timmins, and in his capacity of vice-president of the Ontario Chess Association, he will also ad- vise the representatives of the Northern' Ontario Chess Clubs on the forming of'a league. The simultaneous exhibition will start at 1 p.m., and as Mr. Herbst is prepared to play against any number of boards, chessplayers throughout the district, bringing their own sets and boards, are wel- come to participate. A small do- nation, to cover the cost, will be requested. The element of surprise results against strong. simultaneous play- tion .were rushing the baseball season and just sort. of warming up for the coming warmer weath- er. Kiwanians are wondering what kind of luck Joe Sloan has. In the weekly draw for the pot of gold, Joe has had his name drawn three times in three weeks, some- second draws two and three weeks ago Joe wasn't eligible for the pot, (you have to attend . three meetings in a row), but then he didn't lose out, because the pot accumulates. Oh yes, and then the Kiwanian doesn't get the pot anyway -- the cheque is sent to his; wife as a donation toward a new hat or something. The leader of the Federal Liber- als has a new look. The party has long been noted for its changes to keep pace with the times. But we were somewhat surprised last Saturday afternoon when we noticed that Mike Pearson in his talk over the national hook-up on TV didn't look just right. Couldn't figure out just what was wrong. The voice was Mike's, the. facial expression and mannerisms were his but something was out of place. Finally we noticed just what it was, he had discarded his polka dot bow tie and replaced it with an ordinary dark cravat. Better change back again Mike-- there may be too many others in the same predicament as we were --not able to recognize you right off: x thing unheard of. The first and. Chess Master to Play At Haileybury Club ers characterizes this type ~ of chess as equally interesting for both the beginner and the advanc- ed player, and is one of the rea- sons why it has always been very popular in the larger chess cen- tres. : The Haileybury Hotel has been the scene of chess events in the past. In 1932, MHaileybury was chosen .as the location for the Canadian Chess Championship matches and the meeting of the Chess Federation of Canada, then only a few years old. At that meet- ing the late H. A. Seymour of Haileybury was elected secretary of the Federation. Chess in Canada and its organ- ization have come a long way since and it may not be altogether a coincidence that Haileybury ap- pears on the map of chess-geogra- phy again, as Dr. W. C. Arnold, the president of the growing Hail- eybury Chess Club, now having a membership of twenty-five, was one of the active local chess play- ers during the period that the] Chess Federation of Canada was born. Our biggest single project is Piano Classes in the Schools. In every community there must be competent pianists or teachers who have married and raised a family, who would be interested in this work, which is remunerative, interesting and definitely brings the joy of music to the young. We want to reach these people, and therefore try to do so through the columns of your paper. If any one wishes further please write me. 'Richard Edmunds, M.C.I.
