) PEN PICTURES Stamp of Approval For District Town By. Russ "Community" is a general term which has come to be accepted as defining any city, town, village or township, where people have band- ed together for the general good of all. This is an end point, accept- ed as a matter_of course, but ac- complished through the dedication of a few. I have often noticed that 'the milestones of achievement can be measured in terms of dedi- eation; complete dedication to a cause comes with the hard-earned @so of responsibility. ~ One of the outstanding examples of. dedication to a community comes in the person -of Mayor Arthur Cooke of Haileybury, who since 1947 has served two years as a councillor and seven years as the mayor. Originally from Western Ontario the son of Harold E. Cooke, a cig- ar manufacturer for 50 years, Art was born in Owen Sound; SBS where he obtained his public and secondary school education. Grad- uating from these institutions he apprenticed for pharmacy, later attended Ontario College of Phar- macy and finally graduated from the University of Toronto as a Bachelor of Pharmacy. In 1936 after tiring of the banana belt, Art decided to mush north to Haileybury to manage a drug store there for the Storm Phar- '|in him, and definitely merits the _|praise, "well done". Fleming maceutical Co. He was married in 1940 to Flor- ence Lang, a Haileybury girl and the daughter of Max Lang. One year later he enlisted in the army, served overseas and returned to Haileybury in the summer of 1945. Art was appointed to the station of Post Master in 1946 and is still acting in that capacity. A born politician, Art took to the field immediately, running for councillor in 1947, was elected and served on the council for two years. After his council term had expired he ran for Mayor of the town, and was elected for the years 1949 and 1950. He received a forced retirement when he lost the title of the ballot box to Irving Lyttle the following term, but echoing the cry of Douglas Mac- Arthur, 'I Shall Return", did just that in 1951, and continued to hold the post until 1954. The tide turned and the year 1955 proved to be one of retire- ment for Art as Mayor. A good man never down he catapulted back at the nine count to capture the day in 1956 and remain Mayor until this present time. Alternately damned and crowned with the laurel on the pages of every self-respecting, and some not so self-respecting newspapers in the country, Art loves to relate such experiences to any willing listener. In one incidence after a reporter found that fish were to be caught in the town reservoir due to a leakage in the supply pipe, Art found himself confront- ed with a three foot British Col- umbia salmon, and asked to pose with it in front of the pump house, he politely refused. On another occasion he was ask- ed to ride a team of horses down the main street pulling an inca- pacitated fire truck. In spite of his flare for the spectular, he felt that this was carrying the issue a bit too far. Sensationalism has haunted Art throughout his political career, threatened with fame and fluorida- tion the stories of which would Thursday, April 16, 1959 completely fill file 13 in their tell- ing and would leave cavities in the newspaper annals in their absence. Last fall Art entered on still another field when he in partner- ship with D. McLaughlin formed the Hill-Crest Community Televi- sion Co., designed to bring good television reception to Haileybury. As hobbies Art pursues photo- graphy, owns and operates. an amateur radio station whose call letters are VE3BGE. He also sports about the lake in a 26-foot boat. Art claims that if he is to do all the things which he would like to, they will have to extend the number of hours in the day. But he doesn't intend to make an elec- tion issue of it.
